I've got the ESMTP box checked, and am using outgoing port 587, but that really shouldn't be what your problem is.
It sounds like your Treo is accessing Gmail fine, but it doesn't find anything to download, so the problem may be with your Gmail settings. Do you have another computer, such as your desktop, already configured for POP access with your Gmail? Perhaps going in to the Gmail settings and disabling POP, then reenabling it to download all messages.
Also, try sending a Gmail message to your hotmail account, and see if you are able to send. That would confirm the hypothesis that your settings are all correct.
Anybody else want to chime in with some bright ideas?
