I've been trying three different models--The Motorola HB820 (the one packaged for and sold by Verizon), the Belkin F8T061, and the Logitech Mobile Freedom Headset. I purchased the Belkin and Logitech at CompUSA.
I like the Belkin form factor, especially the charging stand that (using magnets) captures the headset into position. The Logitech seems to provide the loudest sound, and though I haven't tried it yet, with the windscreen I expect it to work well with the top down on my car. The Motorola works reasonably well, too; I was able to have a conversation at 70MPH with the top down (but with the windows up).
The problem I have with all three is this: I wear the Treo in a soft leather case on my left hip, and wear the earpieces in my right ear. In this configuration, I get bad reception on the earpieces--all three of them, about the same poor quality. If I move the earpiece to my left ear, I get acceptable quality. Same if I move the Treo off my hip. Tests tonight (walking around my back yeard, leaving and then listening to voicemail messages) bore this out.
I'm not a moose, understand. I'm 6'2" and about 210Lbs. But apparently those pounds of flesh are enough to screw up a bluetooth signal. I guess I can switch ears, but it's hard to believe that I'm so thickheaded (though my wife would probably claim to have expected such results). Old habits die hard; I've been wearing a pager and/or phone on my left hip for the last 14 years so moving those to the right side would screw me up much worse than using the headset in my left ear.
Anyone else had a similar experience? Anyone found a better headset solution?
