An application that must run in the background, work around events, work with other applications, just has to be in the device's main memory. Examples:
Your third party launcher; your alarm clock (mobileClock), your datebook (Datebook 6), a "today application such as 2Day, your security program (TealLock), your device based backup utility (Resco Backup), a ring tone manager, a bugging manager, 4Cast (since it has the ability to get weather automagically on a set schedule), QuickNews (since it has the ability to update on a set schedule), BluePill (cause it has to be ready to zap the phone at any old time), VolumeCare (cause it has to be ready to up the volume at a moment's notice). The list is long.
