The catch is you have to pay the contrct cancellation fee which is $200 (possibly less...not quite sure) so you can reactivate it when you upgrade. In other words, should you decide you want the 680, its actually cheaper to buy the unlocked version from Palm...plus you get to choose between four cool colors!
On a serious note, the Treo 680 (from what I hear) is not only faster for emails, but it has the new phone app, which makes it worth it to me in itself (the new form factor helps too).
