CNET has an
overview of the various technologies.
Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. Their data connection is EVDO.
AT&T (Cingular) and T-Mobile are GSM phones. They use EDGE and HSDPA. The latter being faster.
GSM is the more predominant technology outside of the US.
For me, SIM card=GSM. No SIM card=CDMA.
