Well, I think persistance paid off. I called again this morning, and was determined not to quit. The first rep I spoke with actually seemed to understand me, though after checking, he was unable to lower the price past 329.99. He acknowledged that it wasn't good enough, and put me through to another rep, a manager of some sort, I suspect. She was empathetic, and listened to me while I explained what I needed. I told her all I wanted was the same pricing as a new customer (279.99 after mail-in rebate), and I was willing to renew my contract. (not unreasonable, I believe, for a long-time customer with 6 lines in the household!)
She did it. I should receive my new Treo by Thursday, no activation fee, and for my price. She apologized for my inconvenience.

I am satisfied, but must say, Sprint needs to step up their customer service.

I'll let you know if the phone arrives as promised, without any more glitches!
