Manufacturers have typically blamed the lack of WiFi on battery life, but that didn't stop the iPhone from including it. It's the wireless companies who are opposed to WiFi. They are reluctant to give up data fees to users who find WiFi as a data plan replacement. On the iPhone, you must purchase data. I wouldn't be opposed to that if Palm would release WiFi in the Treo. For me, it's about speed. It's also very cool to pick up networks as you're browsing around town. Most of them are locked, but it's pretty entertaining when you find one that's open.
I would think the inclusion of WiFi in the iPhone could help manufacturers such as Palm when talking to the wireless providers about features in new smartphones. If they want to compete, they'll need WiFi. According to
Gizmodo, the Treo 800w has WiFi.
