Thanks,
I second the recommendation for Audacity. Use it on your computer to edit the portion of the song you want to use as a ringtone. No need to make the WHOLE SONG a ringtone.

Someone recommended Ringo; instead of Ringo I use mRing, which has been great except that it has an issue with blocked caller ID locking up the phone. Tech support friendly and helpful though. With mRing I can set up different ringtones for people or groups, and you can setup (and even schedule) different profiles like loud, discreet, etc to control how loud it'll play and whether it'll vibrate and stuff.

With all that said, while Ringo and mRing provide enhanced ringtone support via third party software, a update to the AT&T Treo 680 supports mp3 ringtones natively.

Product Update 2.11 for Palm Treo 680 smartphone for AT&T
. Here's the user guide for that update. However, looking through it just now, there definitely isn't a clear explanation of how to take MP3s you've already put on your card and use them. I think you must have to e-mail them or get to them via the web browser as some other folks have indicated. In fact, on the update site it even says, "Enhanced ringtone support – MP3 and other sound files purchased from the web or sent from friends can now be set as ringtones and alerts. Supported ringtone formats include MP3, AAC, AAC+, MIDI, WAV, and AMR." Note the "sent from friends."

It does look like minitones specifically "allows you to select a MP3 file and add it to your ringtone list in Sounds." Once you've got the sound listed as a ringtone, it's easy to assign it as a default tone or even to a contact. So investigate that, too!
