I still say that although it's quite easy to do the all-in-one software, it certainly makes you appreciate the hard work if you try to figure out how to do it yourself, for free. That way, you can do a lot of the tweaking.
But, had the Pocket DVD Studio for Palm been cheaper, like maybe $20 or less, I'd probably get it too. I did trial it and it worked fine, but I went the freeware route and really appreciate the learning experience.
You first just need to get a DVD ripper software like DVD Decrypter (I'm sure many places still have it around even though they're gone) or other DVD rippers. And then use something like Pocket Divx Encoder or similar stuff to convert it to an avi file that can play on the Palm. It can't get any easier for a freeware method. That's the easy way method.
If you want more tweaking, then you'd need to use more software like VirtualModdub and set a lot of other stuff like frame rate, audio formats, video compression, etc.
