It's not that T-Mobile won't support the 650; it's that the 650 is not one of the phones that they are promoting/selling now. However, this doesn't mean that the t-mobile SIM won't work in a 650.

I would suggest just buying a Treo and then putting in the t-Mobile SIM that your son has. It will work and there will be no problem.
