    Default Backup Manager

The following is comprised of a series of emails I have sent/received from BitsNBolts - provider of BackupManager. I do not care to really slam a developer too hard; however, below is just that. Start from the bottom and read up.

What an unfortunate course on your part

. First, I never noted anything about its failure to restore Java files. Second, your backup solution is suppose to restore the device to its state at the time of the backup, something it is not doing and instead of placing it where you do, it should be RIGHT UP FRONT - your software does not return the device to its previous state. So yes, it should not be on a HELP screen - really now, how many of us really look at the help screens? Be honest now - so change it from the HELP screen to the place where everyone will see it.

Also, I sent a note a few months ago about Java files not being restored and you never answered my question, this around the first part of August of this year.

Why do other companies return the device to its state prior to the backup? Resco Backup does and oh, let me tell you, in the forums, I make it a point to tell people that I have licenses for both BackupManager and Resco Backup and use Resco Backup exclusively because BackupManager does not restore Java files.

Another thing, why does your application back up Java files then? Why not at the end of the backup say something like XX files not backed up. If you back up a file, you should restore the file. Is that not the right thing to do?

If your intention is to safeguard data, then why not back up Java files, because they just might be considered by someone to be important. I sure cannot run a Java application with the Java file, now can I?

Why oh why if they are so nasty, does Resco Backup restore them and I have never had a problem with Java or the restoration process or the restore device? Be honest now.

The following link has nothing about Java restoration - http://www.bitsnbolts.com/backupman.php - also,
    • It's just a single tap to get you back to work after a hard reset.
    • Allows restore of complete device or just a few files, it's your choice!
Now look above at "allows restore of complete device or just a few files, it's your choice!" - now again tell me what you mean and be honest about it. There is nothing to support what you are saying. You say complete, I say complete, you no complete and I not complete - so get a life here!

No where on the web site is there a mention about Java - so again, you have a problem, bubba.

"Several software certifications that our corporate customers require" - come on now, the same type of customers also use Resco Backup. You really need to do better than this.

Fraudulent - shall I define it for you?

Frankly, your lack of support is disgusting. Your unwillingness to make right is disgusting. Your reputation in my eyes went from excellent to trash in a matter of hours.

Do what is right and support your product, or pull your product, or place on the front page that your product does not restore the device to its state prior to the backup.

That why, on why does your company even sell it knowing it is not capable of totally restoring a device? I purchased the product a couple of years ago and it no longer meets my needs. May I get my money back?
Actually, it's documented in one of the help screens that the Web Browser and Java files aren't restored. We're not hiding anything, we tell anyone who asks. Our software is there to safeguard your data, not poorly designed applications that break PalmOS rules.
We're not going to give you a refund for software you bought a "couple years ago" because it doesn't meet your needs "a couple years later"

Also, I will let other users know of your company's unwillingness to support restoration of Java files and to look elsewhere for a solution that does. What a shame to not care about your customer base.
Actually, that's exactly the reason they're not restored. Several software certifications that our corporate customers require would not be possible if we implemented the hacks required to restore the Java files. The Java files are broken, they are not valid PalmOS files. They can't be beamed, copied to a device from a card or restored. The system hacks required to do so are nasty and dangerous. We won't implement them.

When are you going to support the restoration of Java? Thanks. Ben

I feel a little of your frustration. I used BackupManager for a good while, but have since switched to Resco, as well.

Of the two backup programs, I prefer BackupManager, not as busy in its screens. What a shame they have no interest in improving the application. Ben
