Default Google Maps for map junkies

There are bunches and bunches and bunches of us who use our Treos for more than just games. Some of use our Treos for games and business things; others for business things; others for email and still others for directions. Well, there is a new contender in the market. Google Maps for the Treo!

It works. In addition to working, the application can live in the device's main memory or the SD card. Only the prc file is needed - unlike KMap, an excellent Java based application, Google Maps only needs a Treo to work...and again, it works.

I'm defenitely getting myself a treo. This has got to be one of the main reason why I'm getting a smart phone, besides broadband internet, and everything else.

Just downloaded and did a little playing around. Looks promising. Nice post, Ben!

Is this worthwhile on the 650, or do you really need EVDO?

They demoed this yesterday on the 680 and it worked great. They looked up pizzerias in the NY area and yes there were just a few in the area. By far, this was the highlight of the demo. Cool app.

I don't have EvDO here in Columbia, only when I'm traveling. I was satisfied with the download speed. The longest time is the initial map loading but the lookups seemed ok.

Can you give me an overview on exactly what it is? Does it already come installed on the treo 700p when you get it from Verizon? I keep reading it has to do something with your labtop also. Does this mean you need a labtop? Sorry for all the stupid questions. This is going to be my first pda and first smart phone ever.

EvDO is the technology Sprint and Verizon (CDMA carriers, vs. GSM carriers like T-mobile, Cingular, etc.) use to deliver broadband-like data speeds on your Treo in certain areas. It started in major metropolitan areas and is constantly expanding. Those links above allow you to check with your carrier and see if it's available for your 700p in your location.
