TX-Treo is on a distinguished road
Default How to section for Newbies?

Newbie here, so please be patient. Just purchased an unlocked, unbranded Treo 650 off ebay, and it came with TCPMP loaded already (.72cr). I copied a movie (.AVI format) onto a 2Gig SD card using a card reader from my computer, but when I put it into my Treo and open up TCPMP, I get an error message:
Error:
Player: Video codec
(MPEG-4 Video) not
supported by the
player!
I hit "OK", then get this:
Error:
Player: Audio codec
(MP3) not supported by
the player!
1. What codecs do I need, and where can I get 'em?
2. Is there a easy, straightforward, easy, cookbook, easy, step-by-step, easy tutorial anywhere for dummies like myself on how to load software on the Treo?
Realy, what I would like to do is remove a lot of the applications that are already on my phone, and instead run them off the SD card. Is this possible (please see number 2 above)?
Thanks.
ps A "how to" section with newbie questions like these would be nice, and would probably save a lot of searching.

I suggest going to palm.com and hit the support section... it actually not too bad. If you want to play AVI you need to download (purchase) a movie player. I purchased MMPLayer (googe it) which is promoted by Palm and for $17 its worth it. I have been watching movie(s) with no problem so far.

TCPMP is a free app that works great on the Treo. What codecs you need depends on what files you are trying to play on the player. You can get them at the TCPMP site.

The FAQ here should help you to get started.

As far as an easy step by step, you should try the 650 manual. There is a lot of good information in it . .

Also, skimming these forums can really teach you a lot as well! Welcome to Everything Treo and if you have any problems, I think you will find us a very friendly bunch here . . .

Aha! After much digging, I finally found the key. Application files must be put into the "Palm/Launcher" folder in order for them to work. I could not find this anywhere in the manual, but did find it (finally) on the Palm support page. Thanks, gents. I'm sure you will be hearing from me again.
