one thing is that the new one DOESN'T have the MEDIA icon on it.

For whatever reason, they don't provide the Treo specific version online.

I got a new computer and downloaded the Palm Desktop to the computer using the disk I received when I bought the Treo. When I downloaded the disk to my old computer and my laptop, the media icon was there on both computers and I could view pictures when I synced. Now, when I download the desktop to my new computer (using the same disk), there is no media. Anyone know what's up?

Although I have installed the desktop software on three computers now, and all of them have included the media icon, I NEVER use it. I always transfer my pictures direct to the card with a card reader. Much faster than hotsync, especially if you are talking about several pictures.

I also use Resco Viewer on the Treo and as far as a picture viewer I am not aware of any out there that does what Resco Viewer does. You can set up slide shows with music, simple editing, include text, send your favorite photos to a favorites folder, rename, encrypt, send via text, email, bluetooth, etc.

I agree with your statement from the poster on the other forum who said that it didn't show up when installed on a second computer. That is strange, and I can't think of any logical reason why . . . But as I have already stated, if it wasn't on my desktop, I wouldn't care. Removing the card, and dropping it in my laptop's card reader is a much faster method of getting pictures to/from my Treo . .

It may depend on the installation technique too. There have been a few times I've installed the palm desktop with the palm device attached, and I'd get certain functions available, but if I didnt connect a device I got a generic install that didnt show the same features. This may also have been tainted by my downloading different versions straight from palm instead of the phone manufacturer (Samsung SPH-i300) at the time as well. My Feb. 7 install of Palm Desktop-Cingular-Treo650 on XP did include the media folder.

FWIW, I installed the Palm desktop from the original CD I got from Sprint. It has a "media" button, but it hangs whenever I click on it. I spent a few hours Googling the issue. It appears to be a common issue that may be a Windows XP issue. I've long since given up on getting it to work.

My media appears to automatically download to the filesystem during hotsync, so I navigate to the media folder and get the media that way.

I just stumbled across this from the Palm site and thought I'd pass it on.....
"The web download of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager does not include the Media conduit." So, if you lose your CD, you will have to copy your media by another means than hotsync.

I swear, Palm seems determined to make each subsequent version of their product (and the Desktop) less useful.

Media may or may not show up in Desktop. The programs (and Desktop support) to Notepad and Expense are gone. They refuse to add wifi to their Treos lest it upset their wireless partners. Who knows what will be next to be cut from their devices?

Soon a Treo may be simply a half-arsed MP3 player and phone, making 'smartphone' an oxymoron....
