Default Hands Down- Quick News!

QuickNews from standalone.com is excellent and can give you as much or as little info as you want (including images!)

Hold the phone! Quick News does have a nice interface, and does have nice podCast support, but it is missing what I feel is an important feature - link depth. Many sites put up RSS feeds that deliver only a summary of a news item/movie review/etc, and then you must follow a link to the full story. Without being able to tell QN to follow(spider) and download hyperlinks down to a certain depth, you are often left with a teaser and not the whole article.

Until QN adds this feature, I am using Sunrise/Plucker for RSS feeds, and QN for Podcast feeds.

Some of the other useful features of the Sunrise/Plucker solution are:
Download news feeds over a fast PC Internet connection and then upload them via Hotsync.
Image options such as no image,4 shades of gray,16 shades of gray, 8bit color,16bit color, links to full size images - and more.

A note on RSS and RSS aggregators. originally I thought using an aggregator was a good idea as it made feeds easy to manage. The problem I had with it was the fact that feeds in the aggregator all go into one big Sunrise file, and the file is often so big that the Hotsync times out. So I stopped using an aggregatore and set up each feed as a separate "document" inside of sunrise.

For podcasts, I am still looking for the perfect solution, where I can download a large number of podcasts via a schedule over a fast Internet connection, and still have them be well-organized on my Treo.

This is a problem with the site, not QuickNews. You'll be hard pressed to find an RSS reader that will be able to give you the full story if its not listed in the feed. What QuickNews does give you is the ability to click on the link and open the page in your web browser to read the complete story.
Feeds like PalmAddict, Engadget, Gawker all give you the full story and pictures.

My vote goes to QuickNews. Among its features: while reading an article, you can one-tap email a copy of the link, or full article, to yourself (or whomever). Be aware, however, that your email app must have "mailto" awareness. The latest Chatter beta adds this, and its a true joy. I send stuff to gmail, where it's all auto-filtered into one directory/area. With gmail's search feature, this makes it tons easier for me to backtrack, and find "that url/article" I saw in QuickNews weeks / months ago.

And it's stable (!) on the Treo 650 (Cingular).

Default Free Podcast Downloading Software?

Hi there!

I just got my Treo 650 w/ unlimited data from Cingular. So far I have been quite happy but am a little bummed about the lack of free software for the Treo. Maybe I have been spoiled with my PC with free, often opensource software, but maybe I am just looking in the wrong places.

One example is I am looking for software for my new Treo to download podcasts. So far the only software I have found is quicknews. Though that sounds great it costs $15.

First question: Is there any free Podcast software for the Treo?
Second question: Are there any particularly recommended sites that have a good collection of free software for the Treo?

Thanks so much,
- Erik

I am not aware of any but there might be. Have your tried some of the Free Palm App sites?

I also download my podcasts through quicknews. And I love it! Its one of my favorite applications. One competitor that I would not recommend is mrss. It doesn't even come close to quicknews and all that it does. Good luck on your search, and let us know if you find anything . . .

I got quicknews and tried it out. I keep getting incomplete mp3 files, maybe 10 or so (it is a wide range though, from 10sec to 30min) of a 1hr broadcast downloaded.

Maybe me connection is going dead for some period of time or something, but is their a way to make it pick up again after it regains the connection, because I just keep ending up w/ all these partial files.

Thanks.

I would think that your theory on losing signal is right on. I don't currently use the "autodownload podcasts" feature in Quicknews. I do it manually. I only got a partial download one morning, when I told it to download a podcast and climbed on an elevator about 5 minutes later where I always lose signal . . . I am not aware of a way to make it pick back up on a podcast.

I use QuickNews, but I don't normally grab podcasts. Most are too slow with the 650's connection speed.
What does everyone use for feeds? Here are my current ones. A few I'm looking to replace, as the feeds are very brief summaries, and it's a pain to fire up Blazer to read articles.
