    Default Software for writers...

    Hello all,
I'm a poet and an old blackberry user. I used to type poems in my notes section on the blackberry, but since the palm has more programs I don't want to use the memo section.
I've been reading about docs to go and it sounds like it would meet my needs. R there any other programs that u guys would recommend? Also what dictionary program is the best?

    Hi:

I believe you mentioned you got a 755p. You should already have Documents To Go on the device. I highly recommend trying it out as I have found it to meet all my Word type needs. The version provided is probably two behind the current available, but it should work well for authoring poems and much more.

Give it a try. If it is not installed for some reason you should be able to find it on your install disk, assuming you have one.

You should do a search of the boards as there are numerous threads about "must have" programs. Here is one to get you going, but keep in mind it is from 700p postings, but it should give you a real good idea of some of the big names out there and what they do. Most will probably have 755 versions.

I will say that a couple to keep in mind are 1) A BACKUP program such as BackUpBuddy or Resco 2) a file management program such as FileZ. There are so many others that depend on your interests. Music? pTunes seems to be the defacto king. If you don't like VersaMail, ChatterMail seems to be the favorite. Use the Treo as a modem? PDANet, etc, etc, etc.

There have been a few recent postings about dictionaries, but I don't recall the recommendations.

    Take a look around....

Wow that was a keyboard full and very well put. DTG is the way to go. There are two other "suites" out there and 1 or 2 little lonesome word processors; DTG is by far the best one out there. I use it extensively for DOC and Excel files. The website is www.dataviz.com. The release I am using is the "premium" one.

I use Documents to Go exclusively and also have Mobile Systems (http://www.mobisystems.com/). It looks good; however, on my 700P it has problems.

The Word part of it is very slow and cannot keep up with the fingers. I do like the extra fonts and the dictionary is ok.

The spread sheet - this bites. Moving to another cell requires a tap of the finger/stylus, it does not respond to the 5-way. The method DTG uses for formula creation is a breeze, not so with this one.

The file manager - the font is so small and may be a problem for some of us to see without straining.

I also tried Quick Office Premier and ran into compatibility issues, it would not open up a spread sheet that I routinely use.

Mobile Word was good, but only a word processor.

Anyway, a suite is the way to go and DTG fits the bill the best of them. One draw back though is that Dataviz rarely releases free upgrades and fixes - they call their upgrades and fixes new RELEASES, while everyone else would call them bug fixes.

If you do try a different app, give it a good go though before buying.
