Like so many Treo users, I signed up for the VeriChat beta group. Initially, I thought I had missed the boat. However, to my suprise :o , I came home tonight to find it in my email. I'm going to install it tonight! :P
I'll post my experiences here in the forum! Anyone else using the beta?
Ok...now that we're live again. In my spare time ;) , I've been testing the new VeriChat software. Already, in the past few days, there have been quite a few upgrades. I haven't noticed anything buggy. I'm using MSN –– works like a charm. Set up took about 30 seconds and I was prompted to configure my services. It hasn't caused any oddities or conflicts that I can tell to date.
I got asked after they had already been testing. The beta seems to be progressing very rapidly. They have already sent me 4 or so upgrades. I just got back from a mini-vacation to Chicago and received two upgrades. v0.35b amd v.039b.
I'm assuming they are shooting for 1.0 to be the final release, so we're less than half way there. The program is remarkably stable for me. Even when my Treo is off, it shows me as being logged into MSN. I'm not sure if I logged out or simply shut the lid.
One cool feature... if I'm tooling around in another app, you'll get a pop up message. You can select "Quick Chat" or open the app. Handy, because at the time...I was busy...so entering BRB via Quick Chat did the trick.
Things are moving along quicker than I thought. This morning brought the 1.0 "Release Candidate" version. Shorthly thereafter, I recieved 1.0 G2. Sounds as if VeriChat could be available sooner than expected. :D
ya.. i got the 1.0 G2 version goin and it is way cool.. and yes you are logged in as long as you have the verichat app open... if you close it, the dialog you talked about is actually coming thru as an sms message with buttons to either chat, which takes you back into the verichat app (which does keep you logged in even if the app itself is not running) and starts a session, or you can do a quick reply which sends it back out using sms, but it of course gets to them as an IM...
so far the only thing i think its missing from being a full IM app is groups which ya need if ya have like 100 people like i do, and maybe emotion icons for all the smiley face things, since when people send them to me now all i see is the actual text representation like (U) or (K), etc...
otherwise it is a true messaging program.. not IM, and not SMS, but the combination of them for a true messaging system... so its much more than just another IM or chatting app... cause of it using the SMS when its not running...
well as cool as this app may be... its not like its going to make me money or change the world, as pdaapds would like you to believe by the prices they have decided to charge... up to 50 bucks for an IM program... seems a bit unreasonable considering that they are breaking into the networks illegally (as any unauthorized app entering any of their IM networks is illegal) and that no other IM program actually even charges anything at all... but i guess everyone for the most part thinks their poop smells like roses.... hopefully they will change their attitude soon so it can be affordable...
Very odd pricing I must admit. I feel that $24.95 is fair for this app considering the development that went into the product and the "added" functionality. If your a moderate to heavy IM user, than this is more than fair. I just don't get the lifetime license. If you pay the $50, then you get a lifetime license which is good for as long as they offer the service/product. Hmmmm?
IMHO, I'll pay the $24.95....and then the $19.95 for year two if nothing surpasses the product. $50 upfront is a bit steep for something that might phased out. For that matter, there could be other alternatives at that point.
ya... its just in too much of a baby or beta stage to pay that much for... once they have some bells and whistles in there like the groups and icons and myabe file transfers, etc, then its maybe worth it, but think about it.. all the IM progs out there are pretty much free... 25 bucks is still kinda steep for what it does.. gotta start out smaller and raise the price as the product grows....
