I went from a Clie SJ-33 to a Palm Tungsten C and all I did was a hotsync using the "Desktop replaces handheld" conduit setting and all was well.
Figured I'd do the same thing with the Treo. However, I decided to install the newer Palm desktop software first. After a couple of hotsyncs I thought things were fine but started having crashes (soft resets) like crazy. I looked at the Backup files and discovered that there were quite a few Sony specific apps in there that I installed on the Treo.
So, I did a hard reset to wipe it and, as Chris said, followed Palm instructions on upgrading. Life was good again.
Figured out a neat thing to do to preserve my sanity. I copy the Treo backups folder and name the copy "B4 Testing Backups" so I can freely test stuff, sync over and over, etc.
If I get a software collision, corruption or just a pain to delete app, all I have to do is delete the current backups folder, rename the copy, do a hard reset with the backup conduit set to "Restore from backup." Then it's all back to the way it was, no hassles.
