I got a D-link USB BT adapter for my PC. I cannot figure out how to get it to hotsynch with my Palm. It recognizes my treo as a smartphone but won't set up a serial port. It sets it up as a modem which I don;t understand... any help?

You will want to install the hotsync manager which comes with the palm software. Palm Desktop I believe is what it is bundled with. There are a couple things you need to set up in addition to this. You will need to configure the virtual port on your pc as well as adjusting the settings within the HotSync manager itself.
You can adjust the port settings through the bluetooth application. Typically by selecting your paired device and looking at the settings. In order to HotSync with your palm device selected as a modem you can deselect this option in the settings window of the bluetooth manager, or you can add an additional port and the software will usually do this automatically by searching for incoming com ports.
Once you have hotsync installed on your pc, when you launch the program it should place an icon in the quicklaunch toolbar. You can right click on the icon and place a checkmark (left click) on Local (for BT hotsync). Then you can right click on it again and select settings, select local, and choose the port you just installed on your pc.
From there if you follow the HotSync setup on your phone, or if you have done this already just launch HotSync and it should work.
I know it sounds like a lot but it is actually pretty easy once you go through it. I hope this helps or at the very least makes a little sense. Good luck.
p.s. If you don't have palm desktop, I believe you can download it from the palm website.
peace

thanks for the info. I think my issue is getting the settings right with the bluetooth app. I have the hotsynch loaded from palm. I hotsynch with usb and want to switch to bt. I don;t know how to change the settings. When I called D-link, they hung up on me 6 times in a row, by accident, but still....c'mon!!!

When establishing a connection you want to make sure the HotSync and the device through the dongle are using the same port. Most BT software will allow you to install additional virtual ports in some fashion.
I am interested to hear what Palm has to say though.

Palm said to call D-Link. I finally figured out on my own how to create a virtual serial port. There are two kinds on my system - client and server. I tried both and then did hotsync and it said authentication failed. I just tried something else and it hasn't failed but it's taking forever and looks like no progress is happening.
