Default Media Net Plan speed vs. PDA DATA CONNECT Plan

I have had my Treo for about a year.

I like the Web browser on the phone and have also setup my phone for bluetooth dun so my laptop can access the intnernet through it. It works ok but is not real fast. It is pretty close to normal dial-up even though it shows a 125 kbps speed. I think that is just the speed from the phone to the laptop.

I would like to know if the EDGE service is really faster. I pay 24.99 for the unlimited MediaNet.

Anyone used both services and noticed a difference? I would hate to just toss the money out the window and waste my time with cingular especially since the data plans say they have a setup fee and a 2 yr commitment.

I think the pre-installed Blazer is fine. I've warmed up to it a bit more after using IE for Pocket PC. There is also Opera mini, but that requires a hefty installation of Java.

There are other options such as Xiino, but that will set you back $30.

Yesterday I called Cingular to have MediaNet added to my Treo. Rep said MediaNet is not for your phone, and I should get Blackberry plan which costs me 39.99. Then I said I'll decide and call them back.

I went online and added MediaNet by my self. Will it cause any problem for me? I am little scared to use internet.

They were recommending their PDA unlimited plan. I'd check to see how much data you are allowed with the MediaNet plan you chose. I believe you can also check usage on your account via their website. It might be best to monitor your activity. Do not go over your data plan -- that could end up in a very costly bill.

Cingular can sometimes be quite funny.

They have a laptop/PDA support department with nice people that will go get whatever you have (when possible) and duplicate what you were doing so they can talk you through it. There was a direct dial number to it but now you have to go through customer service and beg to be connected to the department.

I had a problem with the camera (green lines through the pictures). So I called Cingular hoping to get put through to support with little hassle. The customer service rep looked at my account and told me that I have the wrong plan and need to switch to PDA connect. I told her that what I have is fine, there's even instructions on the Cingular Treo tutorial that should how to use it. I'm happy.

This lady was trying HARD to get me to switch to PDAConnect. She even tried telling me switching to PDAConnect would fix my camera problem.

I told her they weren’t related and she put me on hold, then she came back and said that their tech support person wants to set me up for PDAConnect and run some tests. I told her “NO! I have a camera problem, not an internet connection problem.” She left again and then said “Oh, I see that you don’t have MMS, I’ll add that to your account.” I had to almost scream, “Lady, the camera has a problem. ONLY the camera. NOTHING ELSE! Everything else is fine as-is, the camera...only the camera.” Sheesh.

She finally put me through to support. Sheesh.

BTW, I have two friends that had PDAconnect and switched to MEdiaNet as a test since they can switch back without it affecting their voice plans (no contract renewals, etc.). Neither sees a single difference between the two -- except on their bills.

Question

All,
I picked up my Treo 650 from Cingular on Friday and the store rep insisted that I sign up for the 39.99 PDA Connect plan. Reluctantly, I gave in thinking that was my only option. After discovering this thread (and others just like it), I found that the unlimited MediaNet plan for 19.99 works just fine for the 650. It took me 3 separate calls to their customer service department in order to find somebody who would switch my plan, but she said it came with a catch. The catch is that any e-mail data to and from the 650 will be billed at $.03/kb. I figured that was crap so I told her to switch the plan. Does anybody know if that is true or not or have any idea what she is talking about? I thought she might have been referring to XpressMail or to tethering the pda to a laptop for internet access. For anybody who has switched in the last few days, did your CSR mention anything like this? I just want to make sure that I am not going to get bent over come bill time because I am a heavy e-mail user.

Thanks!

Hi,

There's several MEdia Net plans and each offers different features. I have MEdia Net Unlimited ($20) which gives me unlimited web access and email but I have to pay if I want to send/receive instant text messages SMS, instant text messages with pictures (multimedia messages) MMS, and do chats. I don't do any of those so this was the way to go for me. Text messages can be purchased and added in blocks to this plan.

There's MEdia Basic ($10) which gives you 200 text/instant messages SMS, 40 multimedia messages MMS, and a max of 1MB of surfing. After that you pay for additional use; 10-cent per text message, 20-cents per multidedia message*. There's MEdia Works ($20) that give you 1,000 text/instant messages SMS, unlimited multimedia messages MMS, and a max of 5MB of surfing.

Don't see a thing about 3-cents per email on the MEdia Net page https://cingular.com/media/media_net_purchase If you read the message before yours you'll see that they will try to sell you the PDAConnect plan for all sorts of reasons. I think they're now saying it cures the common cold.

Set yourself up for online access of the cingular.com site and you can add/change your data plan as desired without calling in and it takes effect almost immediately (well, it's supposed to...). As long as you don't change your voice plan your contract says intact and doesn't change regardless of how you change your data plan. They're separate.

* Learned the hard way that they charge in both directions for SMS and MMS. If I send you a picture of my dog I get charged 20-cents to send it and you get charged 20-cents to received it. He's a cute dog but I bet you didn't want to pay 20-cents to see a picture of him. Work around is to send pictures as email and not instant messages.

Default Unlimited PDA Data Plan Question

Hey Guys,

I'm new to this forum and need some help. I just got my Cingular Treo 650 with the unlimited PDA data plan. I have some basic questions which I don't think I found answers to while reading through the forum.

- If I use a 3rd party program like Mondu for IMs, am I going to get charged for text messages by cingular?

- Can I send emails through something like yahoo mail without charge from cingular?

Thanks!

Teo
