| Interesting Survey CNET story Quote: |
Palm is not only the most favored operating system for smart phones in the U.S., it's also the most favored device brand. About 76 percent of Palm owners said they would be "very likely to recommend" their smart phone to others, compared to about 75 percent for Samsung, 69 percent for Sony Ericsson, 67 percent for RIM Blackberry, 54 percent for Motorola and 54 percent for Nokia, the study found.
| Personally, my Treo 650 has far less lag than my Treo 700p. I'm starting to wonder if I should try returning the phone to Verizon for a new one. But, I know a lot of you are experiencing lag as well.

| Everyone with a 700p experiences the occasional lag much more often than with the 650 - it is a documented problem. Complaining about it may make you happier and fuzzier and warmer, but it will not get you anywhere with anyone - lots of others have tried and though the problem has been acknowledged, no update to the Palm OS has been provided.
Does the lag bother me? At first yes, now no. A second or two in the overall use of the machine is not signifcant for me. Stability is more an issue and that I am very happy to state has not be a factor for me.

| I'd have to agree with Ben. I look at it as what we "beta testers" who got it right away are willing to put up with in order to get the device. Since cleaning up my Treo about a month ago, I have no resets and minimal lag, and I'm happy.

| By cleaning up, you mean that you did a hard reset and formatted the SD card?
Sounds like a full reformat, like on our PC's--something I'm used to doing every year or so. I consider my Treo to be a computer in my pocket; so, I can understand doing a full reformat from time-to-time.

| Why clean it out at all and a full reformat every Monday? Surely you jest.
Just take some time to occasionally look around it - what is on the SD card for most users is insignificant if there is sufficient storage space and a full reformat - you are just pushing your luck on that one. The "oh gosh" factor is greatly increased the more you play with it.

| By cleaning up the Treo, KDAllen means he has taken the time to remove unnecessary applications, made sure he is using the latest releases, and is using the proper settings. Like me, he spends time managing the device, not letting the device manage him through the problems associated with resets.
I started out in the POS world with a Kyoceria 6135 and went to the Treo series when the 300 came out and since then have stuck with the Treos. I like them and find them to be good devices once the kinks are worked out. In most situations, I also go early with the devices (except the 650) and because I use them for work, I spend a lot of time achieving a high level of stability. In addition, I have also done my share of beta testing applications, some bad, most good and because I do it on occasion, I take the time to ensure good backups are routinely done and take the time to manage the device.

Our usage patterns and habits seem to be fairly similar.

| It is class room time and because I have a bad tendency to get wordy, I am going to do some linking to attempt to reduce the amount of reading required.
Good housekeeping, something everyone needs to pay attention to.
Like most of us, I have a bad habit of playing and when done playing, I would delete the application with the default launcher. Sounds right? Sure sounds right, but there is a slight problem with using the default launcher. The default launcher does not delete all files associated with an application. The default launcher deletes the main application and by no means catches all of the files associated with an application and there are bunches and bunches (love bunches) of applications out there that spawn multiple creator IDs and files that have no ID and so forth. What this does is leads to a lot of lonesome guys on the Treo wanting to play with someone and they just take up space and sometimes misbehave.
Always backup your device before playing. Always. I use Resco Backup - which is discussed heavily on the forum. Anyway, not backing up leads to the dude hanging around the corner ready to pounch and wreck havoc.
In the past I would once in a while use a file browser such as FileZ and look for files that lonesome - creator IDs that did not match, files I KNEW were no longer on the device, et cetera.
During this time period I also was looking at a launcher with more features and settled on ZLauncher. ZLauncher gives the greatest bang for the money - full feature launcher, full feature file management which also includes full deletion by creator ID. Wow a big improvement here. It does what FileZ does without using any filters...
I then started looking at installation monitoring applications and tried them all - all of them. I tried the free and the pay, the light and the bulls. I finally settled on Uninstall Manager by Northglide ( www.northglide.com). I purchased only the application, not the package. UM made my device cleaner, but I still had the nagging belief that something was not quite the way it should be.
More playing, more looking. I then looked at Cleanup by Northglide and gave it a go and gosh, there were two files it found that I had overlooked.
Cutting to the chase, take a look at the applications offered by Northglide, especially their Neat Freak package. That package alone works wonders and is very well priced and very well supported.
A hard reset for me is a last resort. If you feel you have to do a hard reset, then fine, do so. However, before starting the vicious cycle again, install the Neat Freak package first and then start installing your applications one at a time.
This is not a paid political advertisement - I endorse the applications mentioned above because I use them and in my situation they work very well and as far as the Northglide applications, they are well supported. Support by ZZTechs.com is also pretty good.
