It's about getting the email as soon as it hits your inbox. Kind of like when you use Microsoft Outlook and you get the envelope notification in your start-up tray- that's push... you know the moment you get an email.

OL isnt push, its pull. It queries the server, and if a message grabs it.

Push email is the server, as soon as it gets an email, pushing the email to your inbox without the mail client on your device/computer doing anything. That's basically why BBs are so popular, they are literally parts of a server that when the mail server gets email, a rule (to state simply) sends the email to the recipient client at all times. If you will taking email from being when you want to get it, to when the person wants to send it.

I've always found that setting your email client to auto-retreive on intervals is very "push-like". I could see where true push ala the Blackberry would have it's advantages. It's almost like SMS for email. In my case, my Treo would be buzzing all day.
