Default screen dying!

What does anyone know about screens dying by pixels turning orange? I've heard some rumors about this on other sites. . . something to do with moisture getting into the unit? It starts with just a few pixels out, then spreads across the screen like a fungus. Very sad. Is there an inexpensive way of fixing it or do I just have to bite the bullet and buy a whole new unit? Could this tragedy have been prevented? I have a 600 by the way, and actually wouldn't mind an excuse to get a 650. . . just need to convince my wife.

There are a few threads describing this problem and they usually end up in a replacement unit. Here's one related thread on orange screens on Treo 600's.
