Treo 600 handsfree mic port fix.

I suspect that my handsfree mic port might not be working. At first I thought that my handsfree cord and mic were the problem; however, I've been hearing that the hands free mic port on the phone itself is probably the problem (I think one person on the Palm forum website stated that this piece of equipment had the lifespan of a fruitfly). Anyone had similar problems with this part of the phone? And if so, how did you fix it? Is replacing this part of the phone yourself, an option? Thanks for any guidance.
