Hello, beachbum, and welcome to ET.com. A lot of people have gone through the same decision-making process. Hopefully, this will help you out some. Here's a review of the 700p, and here's a review of the 700wx.
The biggest difference between the two is the operating system that makes each run. The wx is Windows-based and the p runs Palm OS. The 700p isn't just for people with Macs, though. Lots of people who have Windows computers (like me) use the 700p with no problem at all. For example, I used to sync my 650 and now sync my 700p with MS Outlook on my Windows notebook. I use Word, Excel and PowerPoint on my 700p. The 700p has higher screen resolution than the 700wx (320x320 vs. 240x240 on the 700wx).
The 700wx was an improvement over the 700w, giving it more memory, like the 700p has. This gave the wx better ability to multi-task (have more than one program open at a time). It runs Windows Mobile 5 as an operating system.
Maybe someone else will jump in here, but I hope this gives you a good starting point. It will really come down to your personal preference in the end. My advice is go into a store and play with each for awhile. If that doesn't do it for you, pick one up...you could always return it if you're still in the window and go with the other one. Good luck!

I also couldn't make my mind up when deciding, it took me months and months to make up my mind. I've always been partial to the Palm software but once seeing the Windows Mobile that was it for me. I bought the 700wx and I just absolutely love the windows based treo. Personally I think the wx blows away the 700p. Even though the screen is smaller which is kind of crappy the windows makes up for it time and time again!

Easy questions to answer, well sometimes.
Do you use excel, powerpoint, word, or outlook? Get the wx if the answer was yes. You can do it with the other, but if you are like me you dont want to have to go looking for free applications to do that. I have never like Palm OS anyhow, I have had 3 of them

It's a personal preference. I've used Windows CE/Pocket PC/Windows Mobile devices in the past and if I lived in Office (including Outlook), it might be a better fit. The reason I went with the 700P is because I find it more user-friendly. I need a calendar and address book. If I want to access a spreadsheet or Word document, I have that ability. Plus, I like the software available for the Palm.
Best bet would be to go to the retailer and play with both. If you're familiar with the Windows OS on the desktop the 700WX might be more comfortable (start button, recognizable icons, Windows Media Player, etc). And like it's been stated, if you use the Office apps, they're right there for you. I think most carriers give you a trial period (with Verizon it's thirty days)

Here is a generic answer......
If you like it to be a small computer with Windows Xp get the WX and if you want a bunch of circles and a lack of office programs, get the P

Smart Phone Idiot
Your best advice is to play with both devices and see what is right for you. They are both very capable devices with very capable OSes. A good friend recently bought a W thinking it would be more like his computer. When he saw how my Palm OS handles IMAP email and how my Docs to go handles spreadsheets, he said he kind of regrets doing the windows thing. . . .
Thats him though! Many here love the WM platform. Others like the Palm! Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Thats why the best thing to do is to play with both and figure it out for yourself . . .

I use the Treo 700p in a business environment. Throughout the day it sees hours of use with ChatterEmail, HanDBase and Documents to Go V9. I have no stability issues. I have no idea what a bunch of circles means.
With ChatterEmail's ability to work with PUSH mail, the ability to receive an email, do what the email requires (response, editing a document, creating and sending a document in Word/Excel) is a plus - I can receive and respond faster than my BB Pearl coworkers.

the bunch of circles, I was being sarcastic about palms icons.
I have owned 4 palms and I cannot stand Palm OS.....for 2 reasons
1.) I am a computer guru and favor windows
2.) I am a word, excel and powerpoint nut, so I have to have those
