What is versamail sync-ing?

Hi,
So, I've noticed that my hot-syncing takes a bit of time, and the time it takes to sync versamail is a large part of that. Why does it take so long to sync versamail, and what would happen if I am decided NOT to sync versamail anymore? What backup info would I be losing?
I use a pop server, so my mail is also on my cpu--and I only even use versamail if I can't get to my email right away, and most of the messages I get on my treo I end up deleting, so it generally has less than 10 messages in the inbox at any given time (I say that just to say, I really dont know why its taking so long to sync it to begin with!).

Any feedback?
