Homebrew Home brew apps so easy to get! Don't be scared!
STEP BY STEP, FROM STEP 1:
http://www.precentral.net/how-to-install-homebrew-apps
For the record, did search and didn't see a breakdown to make things very easy as in this post. Also, didn't want this to get buried on the third page of an old thread....
I was initially disinterested & a little scared but got tired of waiting. Don't be scared! Also, the homebrew app (catalog) is active. Do try it.
AMAZED!!! at how easy it is to install home brew apps, I now have 110 apps to choose from!
Just did it, the only one I've installed so far is "switcharoo" (and fileCoaster), it automatically switches your wallpaper at time intervals you designate from folder you designate versus all albums.
I believe precentral is going to post an easy-how-to at sometime but for now if interested (BTW, no "rooting" required):
1. Just type in Konami Code (can google "Konami Code pre" if you are bored)... here it is "upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart" and this will enable developer mode, allow ur phone to reboot. Literally type in the letters as if you were using the phone's search feature. This doesn't effect a thing other than allowing "privileges" on your phone such as compatibility with webOS quick install. As a total aside, I could have swarn with the original Konami Contra code you had to hit ".... b a select start".
2. Install the webOS install kit. Get it from:
http://forums.precentral.net/homebre...ll-v1-0-a.html
just click the "download mirror" link from the first post... big thanks to Jason Robitaille, very worthy of donation though NOT required . BTW, as in his first post there is a FAQ section on page 6 post #113 (I believe from memory), but it doesn't go through all the steps as in this post
3. When you run the WebOS install kit make sure you select "emulator"... or just click on "file" and choose "emulator"
4. Then go to the homebrew page at:
http://www.precentral.net/homebrew-apps
5. Now you are ready to install apps. That easy! To make things super easy the first app you'll want to get is "fileCoaster", it's the first app on the list and the best one IMHO
go to the lower part of the page where it says "download options" and click "download fileCoaster". Save it to your desktop or wherver and then when you run WebOS install just find it and install it. Now you have an icon/ app on your phone and when you click it the list of 78 apps (at this time) will pop up and you can download any of them directly to you phone.
Notes:
* you'll need to register at precentral to get access, free like every other forum
* when you connect your phone to your computer, choose "just charge" NOT "USB" or "MEDIA" mode
... Did this work for you? Was this as easy for you? Apps being added to homebrew as well!
if this doesn't work or i left out a step do post and/or check out Jason's thread, link above. I don't think I left anything out though.
---------------
I missed that this was posted earlier:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKirs...layer_embedded
still as I mentioned, didn't see any thread that explained everything/step including that you need developer mode enabled as I explain how to do in addition to some other things to look out for like ensuring "emulator" mode. If you look at Jason's first post or just the video, I suspect as forums indicate, many will still be scratching their head.
...as posted there are risks. See posts below (thanks!), i.e. there are risk so contrary to my thread title, maybe you should be scared
Also I've seen it recommended that you not leave ur phone in developer mode. regarding the later you can just do the konami code again and turn it off.
I have one more thing to say (type):
Palm, catch up

pros and cons
before I write anything else, I highly recommend homebrew. With the new webos install you have very little to worry about. And with filecoaster and preload getting hombrew after the fact should be very easy.
Pros: more choices, easy to install, webosdoctor available for anyone that just happens to brick a pre (pretty difficult with the current install options) and an opportunity to even give feedback during development. The end result may an app for the live app store that you helped create and get to enjoy endlessly.
Cons: palm updates can stop an app from working unintentionally. depending on the type of app, it might even be forced to block the app from working. There is some risk of damage to the pre although minimal at this point it would seem.
tips, give the pros a good chance to review the app if your worried. After the first few rounds and updates to a homebrew app many of the more difficult issues to overcome are resolved. the rest is just about having fun and enjoying your pre.:dft009:happy
If someone has helped you, thank them! If you can help someone then do so!

The only problem with homebrew is no way to get it if your home computer is broke....which is my situation
but thanks for the tips!

I was scared as hell to download the homebrew apps thinking that I would totally mess up my Palm Pre. I read the instruction and gave it a shot. It was so easy, so if i could do it anybody can do it. Like they said don't be scared. Oh yeah my Pre works fine.
Look at the Picture. That's life without Palm

Are there any homebrew apps that you can download without rooting your phone? I'm going to root my phone eventually but I want to wait a little while.

Majority of them require NO rooting
