    Default Chatteremail

My wife has a new Treo 680 and she received information about something called "chatteremail". What is it? I know it is a way a get email on her phone, which is what she wants, but I'm sure there is more to it then simply sending in $39.95 for a license. Reading some of your forum I noticed some problems with it and that you have to sign up for (pay for I'm sure) "data" services from your ISP? We have Comcast email. What all do we need to do to get "chatteremail"?

    Thanks

I am a Chatteremail user - it is email application of choice when it comes to IMAP. Set up is easy, use is easy. Read the docs and after that, ask away. As a note, I am not an Outlook user though.

Chatteremail is a powerful email manager for the Treo! As Ben said, it accels with IMAP protocols. Do a search here on these forums for Versamail (which comes with the Treo) and see all the issues the app has. When I bought my Treo, I really didn't think I needed an app such as Chatter. After problems with corrupt databases, and having to go in and delete/rebuild them, I decided to try Chatter! I can't say enough good about the app! I use several email addeys (currently 5) and have access to my own server with IMAP protocol! I have outlook set up with IMAP as well. I have created folders through my server which show up on both my outlook and my Treo. I receive my mail (push through IMAP) on my Treo. If I wish to keep it, I move it on my Treo to that folder. . . . When I log onto to Outlook, its is also in that folder!
Many here have said that for one POP3 account, Chatter isn't worth it. If I were your wife, I would try Versamail and see if it meets her needs. If you have problems with it, I would highly recommend Chatter! Very well supported and well worth the $ IMO.

Might be too much info. It is sounding a lot too complicated. Is the IMAP protocol (instant messaging) a service I buy in addition to my normal email? We don't instant message. And by POP3 account I assume you mean one user name and password? Yes, she just uses one, and I have my own, but one Comcast account. My wife said the guy who first set up her phone said that Versamail was for corporate accounts?

There are some IMAP servers that have a free basic level of service. I have paid service from Fastmail and Everyone.net. I forward mail from two POP servers I use; the Gmail is not forwarded.

IMAP is not instant messaging. It is a mail system designed around a central mail server and all mail is stored there. When you come on line with an IMAP client such as ChatterEmail, it connects and you can retrieve your mail - the amount of mail that is stored on the device can be as much or as little as you want. The nice thing about IMAP with PUSH is that when an email hits the mail server and your device is logged in to that server via the email client, that message is immediately PUSHED to your device - your device does not poll, it just sits logged in waiting for mail. It is not complicated at all.

POP mail is mail that is downloaded to your device; it does not normally remain on the server. IMAP stays on the server until you delete it from the server. This means that the mail on your device is the same as the laptop or the office computer or your whatever computer.

Versamail is not for just corporate accounts. You will have to build the comcast profile in it just like you would in any email program that supports POP3. You will need her userid, email addey, pop3 and smtp profile. If it doesn't work, you might try changing the smtp profile according to this article in the ET Knowledgebase
