A guide to Unlocking the Treo 600 GSM Firmware


Want to unlock your GSM Treo 600? This document tells you what you need to know. This does not apply to CDMA phones!!

What is locking?


A locked phone is one that can only be used with a certain service provider. For example, a GSM Treo that was locked to T-Mobile would not work with a SIM card from Orange or another GSM network. Naturally, this can be annoying especially if you want to travel abroad and avoid exhorbitant roaming charges.

What is branding?


A branded phone has firmware that is particular to a certain service provider. The phone itself might have a carrier logo painted on the outside, and the firmware usually includes splash screens that display the carrier logo when connecting or disconnecting from wireless mode. Branded phones are almost always locked to one provider. Unlocking your phone will retain the branding.

How do I tell if my phone is locked?


The *only reliable way* is to put in a SIM card from a different carrier and see if it works.

Can I get an unlock code for my Treo?


Occasionally, yes. You can sometimes get an official unlock code from your carrier by requesting it. They will often not oblige unless you have been a customer for a certain length of time, they may even pretend they don't know what you are talking about. Obviously it is not in their interests to allow you to unlock your phone and use it with another carrier. It is not illegal to unlock a phone (although the operators might like you to think it is) and in many countries the carriers are legally obliged to provide the code on request. It's worth a try

Just in case you DO get the SIM subsidy unlock code, which is a unique 8 digit number based on your phone's 15 digit IMEI number:

A word of caution with the above: the Phone app will always allow you to enter ANY 8 digit code and always come back saying it was successfull, even if it is the wrong code. After several (5 we believe) the phone can not be unlocked anymore with the Unlock code itself, only bringing the phone into a shop or using the technique explained below.

How do I unlock my Treo 600?


*You must update your firmware to v3.05/3.06 before unlocking your Treo 600 phone. We have removed the unlocking instructions for previous firmware versions.*

We highly recommend that you make a full HotSync backup of your Treo before continuing.

1. If you have installed any software that automatically turns the wireless mode on you must disable it. eg. (Treo) Butler, Profiles, Treo Allegro, Lightwav, TreoOffOn, Profeo etc.
2. Locate the file named t6gsmup305.zip - this is the most recent version of unlockme305.zip and includes further detailed instructions as well as the tokenwriter tool.
3. Unzip all the contents from the zip file to your computer.
4. Copy all of the unzipped files from the /unlockme305/ directory to your SD card or HotSync them to your Treo.
5. Turn off the wireless mode and plug your Treo into the charger.
6. Run the application on your Treo called Firmware Updater and follow the on screen prompts. Important: Do not turn on the wireless mode or reset while the updater is running.
7. After the update has completed reset the Treo.
8. Insert a sim card from a different network provider and turn on wireless mode to check that your phone is unlocked. There is a 99.9% success rate providing the updater ran without error

If you find that the unlock didn't work or you experience difficulties, take a full backup of your Treo and then do a Hard Reset before trying the method again from step 2.
