Default which one 650 or 700p

    Hi Everyone,

I'm not a Treo owner yet....but, in the next few weeks, i will be a owner of either 650 or 700p. I have a few questions and hope that you guys can help me make my decision:foot:

Right now, i have T-mobile and i will port my number over to either Cingular or Sprint. I would mainly use this for Email, Messaging(a must) for me as well as "to do list" and calendar.

I know Treo 700p is the newer version; really don't like the 680 so it would be between 650 or 700p...any suggestions??

Hey does anyone know if the price of the 700p will come down at all??? Right now it's priced at $ 399.99 with a mail-in-rebate until 11/04/06; if i'm not mistaken. I stopped by the Cingular store and it's showing $ 339.00 for the phone w/bluetooth headset(don't need it since i have a headset)

Hi Candigrl73 and Welcome to the ET forums. It really comes down to preference although there are some differences. The 700 will give you quite a bit more memory over the 650, and also you will get Sprint's EVDO data, which is much faster than the 650 or even the 680. Both do email and messaging GREAT!

I just finished putting together a comparision spec chart of all the Treo's either on the market or are rumored to. Maybe this might help.

Actually, I am leaning to upgrade to an unlocked 680 myself

I know I just purchased a Sprint Treo 700p through an Ebay seller for $199 with a $100 rebate. I'm just waiting on the rebate, but it's being processed. No joke. I also got a $25 Visa Debit card for that company's "referral." It's worked out great for me. Had to sign a two year contract, but no problem for a phone that price! I came from Cingular and the EvDO network IS faster...and cheaper at Sprint for unlimited usage. Pretty satisifed!

If cost is not a factor, the 700p is a better purchase; however, it does have its problems. The big problem is lag time - due to an access bug, the 700p does have slower lauching time. In addition, there are times when it lags. With the additional memory it is a more stable device. Ben

I totally agree with Ben. I like the 700p better than the 650, but the 700 does have lag time. Any time I use the web and try to close Blazer...it takes about 10 seconds for the Treo to shut it down and get to my zLauncher page. More stable than the 650, bluetooth not quite as stable. Find the right headset, you're fine. I've settled on the Sony Ericsson HBH-660, Cardo 600 and the Jabra BT500v.

Regardless of which device you settle on, the stability issues are addressable with the addition of some third party software applications.

My suggestion is that the first application you install is an installation monitor (I use Uninstall Manager - it works very well and runs circles around the default launcher).

The next application is a good device based backup application - I have licenses for both BackupMan and Resco Backup and use Resco Backup exclusively.

If you are handling IMPORTANT data that must be current at all times, take a look at Northglide's On Guard/Backup - it backs up data files for specified applications upon the termination of the application. A great enhance to the backup routine. I consider it to be the most important application on my devices.

The next application is Preference Doctor - makes recovering saved preferences much easier after a reset that blows those preferences away. Preference Doctor also has a function that monitors the db cache and clears it when the free cache reaches a user specified level.

Resco Lock for those applications that do not operate well with the file system or have not been updated to work with it.

A good third party launcher to maximize your free memory. The big guy on the block is ZLauncher - it allows you to customize as much/little as you want and gives the best memory savings there. It also has the big advantage of being able to handle multiple creator IDs.
