Next Gen Treo?
With the intro of the iPhone, certainly Palm must do something, quick, to keep momentum, and to regain market share. I have a two year old 650. I started buying Handspring, and I think I was the first to have one in Europe. Between members of our family, probably we have bought 25 + Handspring and Treo products. I am now looking to upgrade, and would love to keep in the Treo family. Does anybody know if there is an iPhone killer in the Treo future?

Nothing really on the horizon that could be dubbed a "iPhone killer". I think next up will be the Treo 800w which will run some version of Windows Mobile (hopefully 6.1). The next generation Palm OS isn't scheduled for release until 2009. I think that will be an opportunity for Palm to get back it's much needed swagger.
I see a number of converts over at EverythingiCafe, after becoming frustrated with "evolutionary" product releases. I sure hope Palm delivers on their promise of releasing a truly revolutionary smartphone in 09'. Afterall, they started the revolution with the Handspring Treo 180.

The great thing about the iphone is the fact that everybody must be competitive again and that should generate some great products

I'm new to this Forum but am a long time Treo user. Like others I've heard, I, too, am ready for an upgrade in Smartphone and am seriously considering the iPhone. I can't believe Palm has not come out with something that is more advanced than what they already have.
The Treo line is good but has been long in the tooth for awhile. Seeing the photos of the upcoming Treo 800 makes me yawn, especially comparing it to Apple's iPhone. I understand from another post here that Palm is planning a major upgrade in '09. I can't help but feel that may be too late.
It's disappointing that Palm hasn't advanced the Treo line any more significantly than they have. Typical of Apple, they've charted a new course in Smartphone design and technology and it seems to have left Palm sitting at the dock.

I'm due for a new phone in October. I'm hoping someone comes out with something good before then. Right now I'm not sure what I want, I may just stick with my 700P until it falls apart. Of course I've thought about the 755 but everytime my Treo acts up it makes me say no way.
The iPhone is not an option for me.
1. It isn't offered on Verizon.
2. It still can't cut and paste.
3. It still can't edit documents.
That makes it worthless to me.

I fifth Pool_Shark's points, hence the iPhone is not an option for me.
Honolulu - 2,500 miles west of somewhere in the middle of nowhere, the land of Shakes. Kyoceria 6135, Treo 300, 600, 650, 700p, 700w, Centro & 800W, Touch Pro plus 3 other WM phones...

I mean hell, the iPhone can't even send MMS.

I don't think an iPhone is a real option for serious, high-end smartphone users. I mean, it's cute and all, but come on...
I'm holding out for 2009 and crossing my fingers for that new Palm OS release -- if they deal in with a phone at least as decent as my 680 (get rid of that effing too-small Centro keyboard, please!!!) plus real support for A2VP, I'll be a happy girl.

Hi Chris--do you really think there will be another, newer version of the Palm OS (meaning NOT Windows)? I have been using it since the first Kyocera 6135 all the way to the Treo 755P on Sprint and really don't want to switch to Windows / Outlook in order to get faster (3G / RevA) service, better, faster browser, better camera with Flash(?), GPS, WiFi, etc etc and still have a TOUCH screen and DEDICATED keyboard. If they made it a tad thinner and wider (like the new Blackberries) it would be great as well.
Your thoughts / opinions? Your post was the first I heard of this possibility with the Palm OS.

Hi:
The rumors have been floating around for almost a year now and the general belief is that the next gen Palm OS will be Linux-based, code named Nova.
At this time it is rumor and specualtion. Expected delivery of whatever it turns out to be is Q1 2009, which in real terms and based on previous release expectations may easily become Q2 2009.
I am sure Chris is much more tuned in to this so I look forward to his response.
