It appears we might have to rename this thread as The coming Garent OS. In reading the quotes, I have a hard time understanding how a name change can be considered a "milestone".
""The new ACCESS Powered logo that encompasses ACCESS product offerings, and renaming Palm OS to Garnet OS are two more milestones in our evolution as a leading provider of a range of technologies, solutions, platforms and products specifically designed for the mobile phone and converged device markets.",said Tomihisa Kamada, ACCESS co-founder and CTO."

What is not clear to me is...?
IS GarnetOS, palm OS 5?
Cobalt, Palm OS6 will never be released?
The new Palm OS will be linux based and nothing to do with cobalt which already exist but nobody wants to use not even Palm Inc.

Cobalt is dead. Withered on the vine before it was even picked. Interestingly, I read somewhere recenetly that the guy at Apple who was responsible for the whole Copeland/vaporware fiasco is the same guy who headed the Cobalt team at Palm. Ya gotta love his consistency!

Another thing all this means is that Palm, the phone/PDA maker will get the original rights to the NAME of Palm OS, and could develop anything internally and call it the New Palm OS, but, the people who are currently doing the software engineering for the device will probably keep their jobs as the cheif OS developer for the hardware. The new OS will have a name separating their software from the hardware manufacturer which will help selling the OS to customized hardware developers who have products that may directly or indirectly compete with the palm hardware label. I hope they dont depart too heavily from the original easy to use palm concept, unless its for a more reliable and flexible one. What would be interesting is to see who gets the rights to all the orphaned source code to the older Palm OS's and will it go public domain or hidden archives. I'm not with Palm, or Access, so anything I have typed here is pure uneducated speculation and commentary.

I really thought that Access was headed for an approach much like WM05 is. You might see it in a Motorola, or a Samsung, maybe a Seiko watch, as well as a Treo. Maybe the name change thing will better distance them to accomplish this? I do agree with Chris . . . Changing the name from Palm to Garnett isn't what I would call a milestone . . . I was expecting announcements by now regarding ALP's plans for the new OS . . Meanwhile, Microsoft is gaining market share, and people are already saving their lunch money to buy the iphone with a limited OSX in June . . . . .

The iPhone looks great, anyway IM a mac fan... but apple as every other hardware maker to have bugs on first release of mac products, that's why I usually wait for Version 2.0 of Apple hardware. In the other hands, before a I can put my hands on one of those here in At Costa Rica would be long long time.
Back to Palm OS's, I think is great that they start selling the OS, maybe Palm the hardwaremaker will improve on design, even if the Treo 680 is very nice, the Black jack is way slimer, if only it wouldnt have W MObile.
