I am a palm treo fan. And have been a user for the past three years. I recently decide to change my phone brand (I won’t mention to what brand [not a promoter] but I will mention why I am disappointed and changed from palm to another) for a few resons. One being the software. I am all for “if the tools work why complain?” but the Palm os is starting to look soo boring when compared to other phones. And I am NOT a Windows Mobil fan. Another reason is the phone is so chunky. Remember I have been carrying a treo for the past three years and I want a change. something not so fat and easier to carry around. I tried looking at the Centro. A lot smaller than the treo but about as fat. So I decided the “touch screen” was not worth it. That and Palm doesn’t seem to update the camera specs. So I changed and got something thinner. About the same size as the centro, just thinner, no touch screen, no windows mobil and 2.0 mega pixel camera w/ 5x zoom. I like it. I just wish PALM would get with the program and stop relying on Microsoft so much. I wish they update their software – I mean really change it and pretty it up a bit. And not to say the touch screen isn’t cool and I know palm is working and working on ways to make this device thinner and still keep the touch screen capabilities, but maybe they should start focusing on building a all around smaller phone. Centro would be just my type if it weren’t for the lack of imagination of the Palm OS / software and it’s thick size. Seeing this phone was suppose to be a huge change, I really don’t see much of a difference other than the lesser amount of hardware it takes to build the centro. It’s like they took a TREO and cut the sides. So I wouldn’t expect a “huge” change in the TREO 800w.

Well put. The statement also about thinner, thinner is not better when it comes to extended use. The Palm OS may not have any imagination, but it does work and works well for most people.

I've taken a look at some of these ultra-slim phones just to see what's out there. I think I'd be worried about snapping one like a graham cracker...

I'm starting to revert to this thinking more and more which is probably related to my demands when it comes to a smartphone.

With any choice there is some sort of compromise. If you want thin, then the first thing you'll probably notice is diminished battery life. Want a QWERTY keyboard, well then you'll have to cut down on your screen requirements. Want both, then you'll need a bulkier device. Running these sites, I have the unique opportunity to try a variety of devices. As a consumer, it's a tough decision given the 2-year contracts that comes standard with any phone.

And Chris, that really points to a number of compromises to get the phone that does most of what is wanted. I want a one-handed device, one that has good battery life and so on. Until the Centro and its extended battery came along, I was a candidate for a 755P, which meant keeping the same size as the 700P.

Isn't one of the biggest factors in thickness the touch screen? As you may know I am using a BB now and I have to confess, I have found the battery life to be far superior to the Treo. I get an average of three days of pretty hard use where the Treo at best gave me a day and a half. I have to believe some of that is related to running the touchscreen. My BB8830 is about half the thickness of the Treo650 I carried for three years, but no touchscreen. I will also say that because of no touchscreen I am using the BB as a one-hand device much more than I did with the Treo (because I have to) and it is doing pretty well with that, trackball and all. I certainly preferred the Treo's qwerty keyboard over the 8830, but even that is better that it was in the beginning for me.

However, I sure do miss the touchscreen and the familiar Palm OS. The BB interface is pretty spartan in many ways, especially the Calendar. I know there is a whole bunch of complaining and whining about Palm not updating their OS, but I was quite comfortable with it. It was like an old friend since 1997. Sometimes I think some people want change just for the sake of change. I just wish the stability could have been resolved and if it was, my company probably wouldn't have made the move to the BB platform.

For me, the reliability of the BB has been awsome. Not one reset, not one crash or lock-up in an almost two months. It just works. Very impressive.

Personally, I like the sizes (Treo 680) of the products. My fingers are too sloppy to use anything much smaller than these.
