| Help with iPod shuffle I just bought my daughter one from eBay. It came with some of the seller's music still on it, which played. After much trouble, I finally got it updated from May 05 to Mar 06 (wasn't always recognized on either laptop or desktop) and it said it synched my daughter's music from the desktop. I can see the music on the iPod using My Computer, but it won't play. Any suggestions?
I already gave positive feedback when my daughter played music right out of the box so I realize I may just end up eating this.

| I'm chalking this up to experience. My fault, really. I asked my daughter if it had to be an iPod (my friend had just bought one by Fuji) and she said yes, so I jumped on eBay without doing any research. Turns out PriceGrabber could have gotten me a new one for less than I paid for this one. My impatience...I saw one with a buy it now price and jumped on it.
That which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger....and a little pissed.

I've followed the directions from the iPod support site several times on both my laptop and desktop. It finally seemed to work, allowing music to transfer but won't play. I've given up. I got got and it's my fault.

| If you haven't yet, download the latest Shuffle software and try restoring the Shuffle. This is in effect a "hard reset" bring the Treo back to it's initial state.
Here's a related thread on the topic.
Good luck.

| Thanks, Chris, but I've tried that several times. I've truly given up. I'm checking out other brands online now.

| Is it going on and just not playing? I'd hate to see you give up on the Shuffle. When you played the seller's music, was this on the iPod? If so, then it's probably an iTunes issue rather than a shuffle issue.
I'd try unchecking your songs and then downloading a song from iTunes. Plug in the Shuffle to see if it updates. The newly purchased song should be checked. Make sure you eject the shuffle before disconnecting it. This could definitely be the cause.
If all of this doesn't yield results and you haven't given up, try visiting an Apple Store. From what I've heard, they aren't the most friendly bunch (and this annoys the hell out of me - as an Apple nut for quite some time, Apple evangelist should be happy people are visiting the store). They should however be able to tell you if it's working properly.
...and yes, this post is my Apple evangelist side rearing it's ugly head.

Chris | I thought about all of that. My daughter even bought a couple songs direct from iTunes to make sure it just wasn't that her previously-owned music wouldn't play (I was concerned about that since she was so hot on the iPod brand). Nothing. I will say this, though. I'd given up and was checking out alternatives online when she decided to call Apple. Bottom line, they're sending her a new one and we're sending this one back. So, aside from the time and shipping costs, we're not as bad off as we could be. I was prepared to eat the price I'd paid for this one (ripped myself off, by the way) and shipping from the eBay seller.

| Awesome. Same thing happened with my cousin - sort of. He bought his at an Apple Store, had a problem and they just swapped it out. I guess they figure they'll recoup any costs by refurbing your broken Shuffles and then by getting "back into iTunes" at .99 cents a song.
Good luck with the new one!

| Situation resolved I've spent as much time bashing companies' customer service as the next guy, so I figured I'd post and let people know how it all turned out.
Apple promised to send a new iPod and took my credit card # as guarantee that I'd return the defective one. What they sent us was an iPod dock, which solved nothing. I called Apple and explained and they asked me to send it back when I got around to it, but they'd have an iPod to me within 2-3 business days. This was yesterday. About 30 mins ago, the new iPod arrived with a return label so I wouldn't have to pay to return the defective one. Never been an Apple customer before in my life, but I'm pleased with their overall service in this case. Gotta give credit where it's due.
