Default Miscellaneous

Hi, I just got my 700p.

Since this is an off-topic forum, I'll start with a rant:

-Why do they advertise the 700 Treo with an image of some Faux News--I mean Fox news--talking head? It almost turned me off from buying it--I don't want that on my screen! Is that really the Treo consumer audience--viewers of Fox news? Isn't Palm worried about turning the rest of us off?

-What is this Push to Talk thing I keep seeing advertised everywhere? I'm assuming it's not available for the Treo--is that correct? (Just curious--probably not a big deal.)

-This "Essential Software" that comes on the Palm CD that comes with the Treo--is that backup for software that is already installed on my Treo, or is it necessary to install it to Treo? Or do I just have to install it to my computer? Is all of it actually necessary? Is any of it necessary? Where can I find a description of each software item that's on the disk so I can figure out whether it's necessary? (Audible, Bejeweled, Docs to Go, Enterprise, eReader, MobiTV, Palm Files App, Solitaire, Traffic, and Voice Dialing.)

My needs are pretty bare bones.

Thanks.

1) It is misleading just to show that you can have TV on your device. And I agree I wish they wouldn't advertise fox news.

2) I think push to talk is like those walk talkie phones where you don't have to dail a number just push a button and talk.

I'm pretty sure the treo could support push to talk but verizon decides not to have the treo to support it. (Verizon loosen up!)

3) Well it is necessary to install the cd so you have palm desktop. Palm desktop is a must if you want to install apps and have a backup of your PIM.

The extra apps like files I recoomend installing. I say if they are free install them. I think voice dail, traffic and one other app or trial versions. The other apps such as docs to go and etc. Are already built in on the device and can not be taken off.

To look for more apps or their functions you can go to palm.com\software store, handango.com, access, palmgear.com and so on.

hope that helps?

Oh yes, I should have mentioned, I already installed palm desktop--that's not in the "essential software" folder, but is just a file on the disk called "PalmSoftware.pkg." I replaced my Palm Desktop software with that. Trivia: I've had Palm Desktop software long before I had a Palm. That's because Palm acquired my Macintosh personal organizer software in the late 90's and made it into their desktop software. Before that, I used to print my address book in Filofax format and cut it out/punch holes!

Do you know what FilesInstaller.prc does?

Re misleading, I thought you could have some kind of TV on your device--like "NFL Mobile" with Sprint, or "Sprint TV Ultimate Pack" included in their data packages. Do you mean you can't get regular network or cable stations? (Just curious--I don't need a TV of any kind on my phone!)

Oh, so I guess with Push 2 Talk the phone doesn't ring? Anyway, that's a Verizon feature so it doesn't apply to me. Thanks for the info.

1) yes fileinstaller.prc is palms file browser for your device. It allows you to browse your SD card like browsing it on a computer.

Also, i think solatire is on the cd which is free to install. But the rest of it is trial software.

2) Well if you are just using sprints tv package you can't get cable and etc. I think you only get like 15 channels. Same with mobitv you get I think it is 20 channels. * those channels are of their choice*

But if you have cable/dish television at home you can stream your home cable tv to your device. Thus allowing you to view all your 500+ channels.

To do this look at orb.com and at a slingbox. *But you do still need a data paln to do this.*
