System Tools or Repair New Video iPod DOA

Being a gadget freak and Apple nut, I was very excited about the new 5th generation video iPods. I had been waiting for the perfect iPod or at least the perfect update to my 3rd generation 10GB which never quite worked right - the buttons always stick and it never found a fond place in my heart. I've since aquired a Shuffle which as performed admirably, but it's just a baby. I have 17GB or so of music, a ton of photos and it was time for a new iPod. Last week, along strolls Steve on the stage to introduce the new video iPod. Me, being a geek, was glued to the webcast to watch the unveiling. I get excited every time the Apple Store closes. The release of a 60GB -- thinner -- video iPod in NANO black was as close to perfect as I could have hoped for.. It didn't take long before I busted out a credit card and anxiously awaited shipment (which was said to be 5-7 days). I received notification Sunday that it was being shipped from Shanghai China and was estimated to arrive in NY by Thursday. To my surprise, the iPod gods were shining down on me when the FEDEX truck arrived this morning. I had a gleam in my eye - I think the FEDEX guy thought I was going to hug him. I carefully peeled away the packaging and there it was in all it's glory. The 60GB Black iPod. I pressed the center button and awaited the new color screen, not knowing that there wouldn't be a color screen today. No, today was reserved for what us mac users know as the Sad Mac. It means things have gone real bad for your Apple product. I've never seen one that I couldn't cure, but this was different. This little iPod was DOA. Dr. Kovac couldn't save this iPod. After two hours on the phone with Apple tech support, this iPod was back on it's way to Cupertino. I'm left hoping once again that the iPod gods shine on me and find a 60GB iPod to send as a replacement.

Oh well, back to encode what's left of my library (that isn't waterlogged from the flood over the weekend) and wait patiently.

-Chris

My order says "Processing"...will ship on or before October 27th.

I might have to change my Steve Jobs avatar.

That sucks. There's nothing worse than getting a defective product.

I ordered it hours after the annoucement. I was so excited to be one of the first people to get one. I was all ready to start adding more of my CD's and videos to iTunes. The iPod itself looks great, but that doesn't help much. They're customer service was good - despite the long wait and hours on the phone. I'm hoping to have it by the weekend.

They changed it again from October 27th to November 8th. I ended up cancelling it and taking a trip to my local Apple Store. It was a good thing because I got a chance to take a look at both the Black and White iPods. After a fierce internal debate, I opted for the White iPod. The black iPods look great until you touch them -- let alone scratch them. I've heard too many horror stories of scratches after only one week of use. Luckily, I ordered my Invisible Shield last week in anticipation of my new iPod. My first impressions of the new Video iPod - "This thing rocks. I've already ordered a few very cool 80's videos."

This one is a keeper. The video looks great and the iPod is performing like a champ. My only problem is spending the time to move everything to iTunes. I have a few boxes of CD's that I haven't converted yet.

In the end, it worked out best. I'm real happy with the white iPod. I always try and take care of my gadgets -- it would really burn me up if I scratched a one week old black iPod and it was noticable.

Now, no worries...

I knew you'd get a kick out of my DOA iPod. The new one is working like a champ! I spent about 2 hours putting the dopey Invisible Shield on it -- the one downside to the new iPods is that they are very vulnerable to scratches.

Chris,

What formats of video can it play? Can it play DivX files? MPEG2? Can you drag-and-drop video files onto the iPod as if it were another drive? If it could do these things, I might not sneer so much. But if it only plays proprietary formats and prevents you from freely moving files around, then I stand by my previously-stated position.....iPodsuck!
