HP buys Linux quick-boot OS Hyperspace, webOS implications hazy at best

HP has reached an agreement with Phoenix Technologies (BIOS-programmers) to buy their instant-on Linux-based Hyperspace platform for a cool $12 million. Hyperspace is not a full-on OS and is meant to be used in conjunction with another operating system, i.e. slow-booting Windows. The instant-on capability of Hyperspace is its most-intriguing feature; with just the touch of a button the OS boots in a few seconds, giving the computer user near instant access to the internet, their music, and a few other basic tasks.

While it’s more than likely that HP will use the purchase of Hyperspace to further differentiate their laptop products, we can’t help but wonder what this might mean for soon-to-be-purchased webOS. HP was mum on what exactly they intend to do with Hyperspace, but we’re cheering from the sidelines for at least some of the technology from the instant-on OS to find its way into painfully-slow-to-boot webOS, which is also based on Linux. Additionally, since the two operating systems are Linux-based, there’s the intriguing possibility of Hyperspace being leveraged to quickly and easily add webOS to HP’s other portable products. Imagine a dual-booting HP tablet running webOS and Windows 7...

Hewlett-Packard will purchase assets owned by Phoenix Technologies, including HyperSpace, a Linux-based operating system that allows PCs to boot rapidly. Phoenix previously signed an agreement with Samsung to deliver instant on-off capabilities to netbooks. HP has been focused on acquisitions of late, particularly the April purchase of Palm for $1.2 billion. Palm's WebOS will likely go into future HP products such as tablet PCs.

Hewlett-Packard agreed June 10 to purchase assets owned by Phoenix Technologies, including a Linux-based operating system and client virtualization software, in a deal worth $12 million in cash. The products in question are Phoenix's HyperSpace, HyperCore and Phoenix Flip.

HyperSpace is a Linux-based operating system that allows a PC to boot rapidly, a key capability for portable devices such as netbooks and laptops. The other Phoenix assets acquired by HP center on client virtualization, including HyperCore, which enables HyperSpace to run specialized core services alongside Windows.

"We are very pleased that HP has agreed to acquire these assets relating to Phoenix's HyperSpace, given HP's rich history of innovation and product differentiation," Tom Lacey, president and CEO of Phoenix, said in a statement.

The deal is expected to close in June. Phoenix has been divesting itself of "noncore assets" in order to better focus on its CSS (Core Systems Software) business, including the sale of its FailSafe and Freeze assets in April. Phoenix has also made agreements with other tech entities in recent month. Phoenix and Samsung announced a strategic partnership in October 2009 to deliver instant on-off capabilities and long battery life to netbooks.

Phoenix Tech Selling Software Lines to HP for $12M Phoenix selling virtualization software lines to Hewlett-Packard for $12 million Software maker Phoenix Technologies Ltd . said Thursday it is selling three virtualization software lines to Hewlett-Packard Co. for $12 million as it continues to pare assets and focus on the core systems software market. Virtualization software allows one server to replicate the function of multiple machines, letting companies get more out of each server they own.

Phoenix said the deal includes its HyperSpace, HyperCore and Phoenix Flip products. It expects to close the sale this month. The sale follows Phoenix's divestment in April of its FailSafe and Freeze assets. The company's shares were up 7 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $3.03 in morning trading.

Camera or Multimedia HP Targets Mobile Market With Virtualization Buy

HP (NYSE:HPQ) appears to be enhancing its mobile PC and smart device strategy with the acquisition of certain virtualization technologies from Phoenix that could be a nice fit with its future PalmOS strategy.

HP is acquiring three specific virtualization technologies, along with related intellectual property and assets including the software development team, from Phoenix.

The first, HyperSpace, gives instant-on, or "fast boot," capabilities to mobile devices.

The second, HyperCore, optimized file management and file sharing between multiple devices.

The third, Phoenix Flip, lets users toggle back and forth between two operating environments on the same device.

Phoenix Flip could be very useful for a user with a personal laptop and a business laptop and whose business policies disallow the downloading of personal applications on business devices.

With Phoenix Flip, such a user could have a single laptop configured with two virtual desktops, one for personal use and one for business use, and could go between the two as needed.
