Does Palm Pre work with outlook for contacts and calender.
Does it work on mac with i cal or address book?
or is the software used with this phone a separate application that you have to start all over from scratch?
thank.

Syncing of address book / calendar / contacts data is best done with the Pre via the "cloud". It makes it very easy to do. All it requires the user to do is to maintain this information on cloud utilities like Google, Facebook or a Microsoft Exchange server.
So to answer your questions:
Does Palm Pre work with outlook for contacts and calender.
Yes, if outlook is connected to an exchange server.
Does it work on mac with i cal or address book?
Not directly, you would need to sync your ical/addresses with your google account.
That's my understanding - Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

currently, i use active sync to sync my Q9c to outlook. Its a stand alone machine, and does not use exchange server.
I am curious if I will still be able to sync to stand alone outlook?

I have no experience with Palm devices or "active sync". Since we haven't heard anything about syncing software, let's assume that you wont be able to do that directly (although you may very well be able to). The clearest option to me would be to export your contacts and calendar to google's gmail and calendar and have the sync done automatically and transparently.
But is it the mail you're interested in? If your mail isn't handled by an exchange server, do you have outlook email account setup as POP3 or IMAP4? Who's domain name is the address on? If you have the incoming and outgoing(smtp) servers and ports, then surely you can set that up on the Pre. I think it would be silly to have a smartphone like the pre and not allow POP and IMAP email support.
Essentially, the whole Exchange Server / gMail compatibility is no more than a glorified IMAP connection (at least for mail).
I guess I'm giving my oppinion on what the phone should be able to do. Wish we knew more

My Treo 650 sync'ed with Outlook without an Exchange server. Stands to reason that the Pre will too.. if they removed that functionality, I'd be very surprised.
Edit : I think if you want to sync with your personal Outlook without an Exchange server over the Internet (das cloud) you would need some kind of 3rd party solution. If you hook your Pre directly to your PC, I bet you'll be able to sync with Outlook directly.

For the calendar, you should be able to use this (Windows):

For calendar on mac:

As far as contacts go, you can either export them from your program, then import them to gmail using this:

Or you can used a paid program to do it:

The current Palms can sync with outlook when plugged in using HotSync, so the pre will most likely have the same functionality.

I don't do anything Google right now other than search. Do i need to get me a Google account. I posted this on another post in a diff forum and they all got into "clouds" apps and sending it to g mail / Google??? what are your thought if the phone is web based web os ?? which i am really learning what that means. can you run all yourcontacts thriugh google and ... i want to see what i looks like and how it works.
If it did not support pop and smtp that would be a waste of money.
