I had the same problem - my family (5 phones) has been on an old plan (Sprint Free & Clear 4500 mins) for years, and we had the data pack added on. However, after doing my research, I discovered that the Everything Data Family plan would end up saving my parents $100/month. This is partly because we had 3 data pack add-ons, 2 unlimited text add-ons, 1 1000 text add-ons, and we used less than anytime minutes each month. If you have access to the online account, you can analyze your plan and see if it's going to end up cheaper or not.
Also, when I visited the store, I was told I could add an Everything plan for only $30/month for just one phone. Not sure if she made this up or not, but it's worth asking about if you can't change the whole family's plan.

the problem is my father is so set in his ways that even if it did save money he'd never change the plan, he sees me as dumb and immature when it comes to money because I'm so young

Hate to point out the obvious, but why don't you get your own plan and pay for it yourself? $69 per month is pretty reasonable for what you're getting with this phone.

I would love to be able to do that. I just don't keep up with a job since I'm in school fulltime and I can't manage both. I have a feeling I'm going to have to attempt this approach when my contract ends though.

Sorry to hear that - what if the information came from an anonymous source?

A lot of schools offer discounted phone plans - I know that my university offers 23% off for students and employees, which makes the Everything Data plan even more affordable. Have you looked into whether any deals apply for your school?

I don't think my school does at all, I've never heard of schools getting discounts here. I know I get a discount with my internship company, problem is that job ends in July and my contract ends in December. Perhaps I'll go price things out with my employee discount.

Sounds like the pre just isnt gonna work for u. If he isnt gonna change no matter what and u cant get your own plan, then all options are gone. Quite the dilema....
The PRE is absolutely amazing, but wait so is the Hero. I think I LOVE them BOTH.......:043:heart_pounding

The bottom line
OK, I have read many different things on here, and I just want to clear "Everything" up!!
I am a business rep for a lage indirect Sprint dealer!
The Pre is just like the Instinct when it come to the type of rate plan that the phone has to be on! It does HAVE to be on some type of "Everything Data" plan. Whether its one of the following Everything Data Individual, Family, or Simply Everything plans, it just has to have Unlimited Data included in the plan!
It would be pointless to get the new Palm Pre, and not have "Unlimited Data"! Would you buy a car with no wheels? Of course not! The Pre is so multi-functional, w/o unlimited data, its just a regular phone, and we offer phones like that for free!
I have had a demo Pre for 2 weeks now, and although it is much more business-minded than the iPhone, and a Bad-@$$ phone, it still doesn't touch the Blackberry if your looking for a "Business" device! So I'm sticking with my Curve until the BB Niagra comes out!
Also if you get a disc from you employer, school, or whatever, they DO NOT usually keep checking that after the discount code is applied to the account. Once it's on there your usually good to go for as long as your with Sprint! So if you don't take advantage of those, no matter where you will be in 6 months, your just throwing $$$ away!
Hope all of this Helped!!!!!

I am looking for some clarification:
I have the everything messaging plan with optional unlimited data plan on my phone. Will I be able to get the pre on my line since I have the optional unlimited data plan?
-
NEGATIVE, the Pre has to be on 1 of the "Everything Data" plans! It will not work on a plan that has data as an add-on!
