Exclamation HELP!! Pre and Text Messaging

SMS weirdness that I need you sleuths to help me with.

When I get a text message from e-mail (a message is sent to <moble#>@messaging.sprintpcs.com or <mobile#>@pm.sprint.com) the text message shows up either with a "short code" (e.g. 9285) or just the "polite name" from the e-mail message. Neither which of these does the phone know how to respond to, so any attempts to send a message back get a "Your MSG could not be DELIVERED because Invalid Destination Account" from 9230.

Now, the good lady at Sprint Tech Support wants to try to tell me that WebOS is the culprit and the new Palm Pre's cannot respond to SMS messages sent from e-mail. They are escalating it to research further, but before they call back I wanted to ask you guys if any of you know whether this is true or I should continue to press for a fix.

When you send an e-mail the SMS address of your phone, can you reply as normal? Can anyone prove that I won't have to return my new beloved Pre because Palm took a step back with SMS?

    Thanks a bajillion in advance.

I would think that if there were an elegant (or even inelegant) solution to this problem someone would have shared it by now. Hopefully it's on some "we gotta fix the following" whiteboard somewhere in the bowels of Palmville.

    Ugh. Not good news.

Oddly if I send a SMS to my email address user@gmail.com the from field reads <mobile#>@messaging.sprintpcs.com as you would expect. Reply to it and it still shows up as coming from "6285".

Sad that something that seems so simple as SMS could still be a place Palm would fumble; like tripping over your shoe laces while dancing a ballet. This phone has so much going for it...

    *fingers crossed* can haz update?

Anyone with more positive results? or am I re-boxing a phone?

I will add one more twist to this puzzle.

I have my phone set to Private ID so people i call dont see my number. So in my contacts I have numbers listed for people that I want to see me calling listed as *82-XXX-XXX-XXXX and then listed as XXX-XXX-XXXX for when they call me i can see the caller ID.

OK so when i text someone i use the contacts and it works fine, but sometimes when I reply i get that error and in the details it shows the Pre is trying to use the *82 number to SMS.

Even in my contacts if I have 2 mobile numbers listed. One with the *82 and the other without, when you click on the contact name only the one with *82 shows. Weird, but i am sure they will fix it.
