Nice idea I just don't think there is enough of a demand for such to make it practical.

My best wishes to all!
This is my first question. I am not highly skilled, but I currently use my 2 year-old Palm Treo wx for basic functions such as cell phone, email, web browsing, retrieving stockmarket charts from Stockcharts.com, and of course I keep my favorites readily available. I have seen the wonderful presentations of the Palm Pre which are in palmpre.org. I am ecstatic from what I have seen and I am inclined to wait for the release instead of upgrading to Palm Pro.
My decision will depend on the opinions I can receive from any member of this message board that can give me a sound practical comparison of what the comparable benefits will be.
Can someone help me understand the comparable specifications in more simple non-technical language?
For example, what about the speed in opening web pages, looking at charts, and what functions would I have to lose (or gain) by choosing the Pre versus the Pro?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Rad2, Great questions. I also would like to hear the answers to them.

Hi Gerald,
I might suggest you ask your question in the Centro network (click here) and not limit yourself to the Pre forums. I would also suggest you contact your subscriber for support. Best of luck!

Hi Rad2,
The first thing I'd like to point out is that the operating systems are different. The Pre introduces a linux-based OS and applications are written using the same philosophies as web pages. This is an unvetted OS but software houses seem pleased with the ease of rewriting their programs because everything is so "light." The downside is that the application library may be smallish at launch. The Treo Pro runs on Windows and has a large category of long-running (and potentially bloated) apps.
After the OS, the differences in performance would mostly be due to hardware. Obviously what follows is not the complete picture, even within a spec, but I throw this together for ease of digestion.
- Processor... Pre: 600MHz Treo Pro: 528MHz
- Display... Pre: 3.1in @ 320x480 Treo Pro: 1.7in @ 320x320
- Memory... Pre: ~7.5GB* Treo Pro: Limited to size of MicroSD card
- Camera... Pre: 3MPixel Treo Pro: 2MPixel
- Accelerometer... Pre: Yes Treo Pro: No
- Weight... Pre: 4.76oz Treo Pro: 4.69oz
- Mass Density...** Pre: 0.79oz/in^3 Treo Pro: 0.84oz/in^3
* no expansion slot
** sort of a measure of how hefty it feels in the hand
The phones otherwise share several aspects: full QWERTY keyboard, removable battery, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth, 3.5mm jack, microUSB 2.0 connector, etc.
I think this will probably indicate that the (very likely) pricier Pre, with no firm release date, will be the better phone of the two.
Hope this helps,
.

.plaid,
Thanks for your prompt and detailed response. It clears up many points that I did not understand. May I ask some additional questions?
With a more powerful processor, what can we expect? A faster or a shorter waiting time for opening of websites? (Right now it can take between 12 seconds to 23 seconds for a favorite website to open up in my Treo 700 wx!)
Can you please give some examples of applications that the Pre would lack when compared to windows? (With this information I can decide if I really don't need the larger application library anyway).
I am used to using Outlook for emails and writing in a Word format in my Dell Notebook as well as in my desktop at home and at work. Will I be missing something, or is the Pre easily comparable or compatible with the current functions of my Treo 700 wx? Is it as easy with the Pre to transfer photos and other information with the sync cable?
What does an accelerometer do? Thank you!

Websites on the Palm Pre will be significantly faster than the Treo 700wx. Pages will render exactly like they do in your desktop browser.

This thread, while great, is becoming too much of a "catch-all". Going to lock this thread. Please create breakout topics. This will make it easier for people to discuss various topics and locate answers. Thanks.
