I walked into a Radio Shack and asked the kid behind the counter if I could keep my current family voice-only plan and tack on a data package that would be Pre-compatible. He didn't know, but he pulled up a chat session with Sprint customer service. That customer service person told him that I could add a "Power Pro" data plan to my existing voice plan for $30 to fully enable any smartphone (including the Pre). The "Power Pro" plan included unlimited data, unlimited messaging, and unlimited navigation.

If that customer service person knows what they're talking about (probably a 50-50 possibility), then this would be a cheaper option for me than getting a family share everything data plan for 130 per month.
