Default Help with Sprint GPS - Treo 700wx

I've recently retired my Palm TX and Motorola i560 and moved to a Palm Treo 700wx with Sprint. The manual says that the 700wx is GPS enabled. However, I do have questions.

Do I need any additional hardware to use the 700wx as a GPS device?

I have the unlimited "Ultimate Sprint Power Vision" package that is supposed to let me have unlimited Sprint Navagation access. I've looked but can't seem to find this software. I have found Microsoft's "Live Search" for Sprint. Is that the same thing?

Would I be better off scaling back my unlimited plan and using the AAA or Garmin GPS software?

    Any help will be appreciated.

from the palm site manual for the 700wx
298 Section 6B: Customizing Your Smart Device
    Setting Up a GPS Device
If you purchased an optional Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, your
smart device can show your exact location on a map.
    1. Press Start and select Settings.
    2. Select the System tab, and then select GPS .

    3. On the Programs tab, select the GPS program port list, and then select the
port for applications to use to access GPS information. (This port must also
be selected in your GPS application’s configuration settings.)
    4. Select the Hardware tab.
    5. Select the GPS hardware port list, and then select the port to which your GPS
receiver is connected. (This must be a different port from the one you set in
step 3 as your program port. To connect to the GPS device using a Bluetooth
connection, you must first set up a partnership between the two devices.
See “Setting Up a Bluetooth Connection” on page161.)
    6. Select the Access tab and check the Manage GPS automatically box. This
setting lets more than one application simultaneously access your GPS
    information.
So you need to get a receiver to make it work

    Plunker,
Thanks for your help. Does that mean that I don't have to use the $10 per month GPS service from Sprint? I can just buy the reciever and be done with it? Thanks.

    John,
I just went through the same thing your looking into. I have a treo 755p with sprint, I had the $15.00 unlimited data plan. I found that when i tried to download the navigator software from the sprint site it would tell me that the software would not work on this phone. I went to the telenav site (http://www.telenav.com/campaign/inde...4184sb13pi6ai1)
and checked, It said i could use the software.

I downloaded the software, installed it, and it works great. It does cost $10.00 per month w/unlimited usage. And you will need to pick up a receiver. I then went to the sprint store and asked them to sign me up for the $25.00 plan which includes the unlimited navigator, and TV and all the extras. So for the extra $10.00 per month it will work great.

    Hope this helps
    Ron
    Take care,
    Ron

Sorry for responding late. I think the gps plan from sprint is an extra $10.00 a month. I believe the other gps units (tomtom, garmin etc..) do not require data plans or access.

Google maps does require access as is pretty neat but is not a gps. You can enter your location and destination and it maps it for you but no turn by turn stuff.

The SprintNav will not work with any Treo. If you look at the suppoted devices list, no Treos are listed.

As for TeleNav any GPS receiver should work. I looked into using TeleNav before I got TomTom but didnʻt like the fact that I had to buy a receiver and then pay a monthly fee. I donʻt use the GPS often enough to pay a monthly fee IMO. If you do use it ALOT though it is worth the monthly fee, as the TeleNav maps are updated as roads change and TomTom uses preloaded software that does not update.

Treos will work on telenav according to their web site. The treo would need a receiver to work. At least the 650 would I do not know if the newer ones have gps.

None of the Treo's as of now have GPS enabled on the device all the chips are set to passive. When you user guide says that it has GPS it is talking about E911. What you want to look for is GPS LBS (location based services) The Treo 800W that is to be released in July will have it and they have an update coming out for the Centro that will use Triangulation from the towers so it wont be true GPS. In order to get GPS on Palm devices you have to purchase the reciever and software from palm or use third party

If anyone is interested on how to add addresses and/or look up businesses on the web and sync them to their navigator’s “favorites”, here is the link: http://my.telenav.com
