Never Ported Before
Alright, go ahead and call me a complete noob, but I've never ported my phone number. I was with T-Mobile for 7 years and switched to Cingular and took new phone numbers in 2005 and I haven't changed anything since.
When I get my Pre on Saturday, do I have to notify AT&T or does Sprint handle that for me? Will AT&T prorate my final month's charges?
Does my Razr just stop ringing when my Pre starts ringing? Does this happen while I'm at the purchase location, or a few hours later?
I know I could ask these silly questions at any place that sells cell phones, but I'm becoming very impressed with this EverythingPre community and figure someone nice will be reading and explain things in easy terms.
This Pre is going to be fun - I've never done anything besides make and take calls with my phone. I've never sent a text message, I've never checked email on a phone, I've never browsed a website on a phone. I've literally only talked and taken pictures.

They will deal with porting over the number for you. Just go to sprint get the phone and tell them you want to port your number you are going to need your phone number and your account number from your previous carrier when you go .

...to answer one of your other questions...yes, your old phone will stop ringing and your new phone will start ringing without you having to touch a thing. Can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. One thing to remember: don't cancel your service with your old carrier....let the new carrier handle that or you could lose your number!
Here's a link to a good article on additional things to keep in mind when porting your number.

Dear Noob,
Welcome to Sprint, and welcome to the Pre community. Don't worry, we were all noobs at one time or another. Obviously, you learn fast, because you found us!!!
I highly recommend once you have your account set up go to www.sprint.com and become intimately familiar with all the available plans, options and billing. Utilizing the website efficiently will prevent many calls to customer service, and improve your overall experience with Sprint.
When you activate your new phone, they will tell you between one to four hours, but restart your phone and it will probably work right away (although your number might take a little time to port over). You might continue to receive calls on your old phone, and your number may not show up properly on the recipients caller id, but once the porting is all done, you should be good to go.

customer service at Sprint with porting
good suggestions from all. I have ported several lines with different phones over the years with Sprint. Is it just my kid or do a lot of teenagers lose or have their phones stolen? Sometimes there were problems since we had less popular - and older - cheap replacement phones from ebay but the Sprint staff was always helpful. They found the right documentation and walked me through the codes that had to be entered on the phone and stayed on the line until everything worked.

Multiple lines with Sprint has always been a pleasure. I swap phones occasionally with my kids, and replacements are always breeze. Really I think that versatility is one of Sprint's major attributes.
My kids <knock on wood> have never lost a phone. they are great at keeping track of them. We started them on phones when they were 12 and 14 and now they are 15 and 17 respectfully, and I am proud to say they are only on their second phone each. My 17 year old has a Rumor and My 15 year old has a M520.
