iCal & Treo calendars/categories

I recently switched from Palm Desktop to iCal on my Mac. Everything syncs fine with my Treo 600 except for To Do categories/calendars - new To Do items created in any of my calendars in iCal come across as "unfiled" on my Treo. Anything new created on my Treo under a specific category ends up in the "general" calendar in iCal. Is there a trick to this or is this just the way it is?

You're right; Treo ToDo (I think on the 600 they're still caled "ToDo's" rather than the current "Tasks") categories should map to iCal's ToDo categories. I can think of a few things to think about:
    • Be sure your Treo ToDo categories are exactly the same as your iCal categories. Because the Mac treats ToDo items as part of an iCal calendar, syncing will stumble if it encounters a Treo ToDo in a category not reflected in iCal.
    • It sounds like the items will sync, but not map categories correctly. As an experiment, see what happens if you change the category of an "unfiled" or "general" item to a different category and then sync. Does that category change on the other device?
    • You may need to reset sync history. This will force the Mac to treat your Treo as a never-synced device. iCal/ToDo categories should then map correctly on the "first" sync. Make sure you data is correct on the Mac, the launch iSync, go to Prefs, click the Reset Sync History button and follow instructions. As always, you should have a Treo backup utility and have a backup on your SD card just in case of data loss.
    • I also suggest you check out Missing Sync by MarkSpace. It's a replacement for Palm's conduit manager, does a better job synchronizing data, is better supported, and is a much more feature-rich solution to device synchronization.

Good luck, and post your results.

As an experiment, see what happens if you change the category of an "unfiled" or "general" item to a different category and then sync. Does that category change on the other device like that,

Thanks for the suggestion, this thread was started ages ago and I've moved on to the iPhone now.
