I recently downloaded and installed the GPRS upgrade as I often travel to places which have this service. *Much to my dismay, suddenly my Treo270 constantly turns on the backlight--sometimes as often as 3 times in 5 minutes. *Even though I set the "auto-off" at 30 seconds, you can imagine what this does to the already weak battery time! *Handspring email help is of no help and they only suggested I go to the $20 charge "special assistance" phone number! *This "automatic on" backlight problem is only when the phone is on, not when "off service" and only happened after the GPRS download. *Anyone have any suggestions before I spend my $20?

Try deleting any SMS in your pending folder and ot delete all SMS messages.

Hi Miller,
Good thought, but the only pending SMS are the stupid boilerplate one-liners that this thing came with. Do you really think it would help to delete all of them? No problem, I've never used them anyway, but might some day!

There have been reports that after running the gprs updater, you will experience this issue and if you delete the sms in the 3 folders, inbox, pending and sent it should resolve.
By the way official announcments from Handspring is that the US gprs version will be released at the end of this week or beginning of next! We'll see!

I'll try it today and if it works, I'll owe YOU the $20! If there have "been reports" of this, it's sort of strange that e-mail Handspring support doesn't know about it and suggest it be tried instead of immediately going for the easy $20! I'll let you know how it goes.

It seems to work!
I have spent considerable time "checking" the screen out of the corner of my eye since morning and haven't seen it light yet! And it's been about 4 hours! Why doesn't Handspring know about this delightfully simple solution?
Where do I send your $20?
Thanks a bunch, you've made my day! (Not just for the $20 saved, but for the saving of the "hassle factor" too which is probably the most important!)

Glad to hear it worked!!
Next time your in L.A., you can buy me lunch!
Just kidding!
