I have Pocket Tunes Deluxe on my Treo 600. I've downloaded files from Napster (yes, I actually paid for music I downloaded) which have DRM (Digital Rights Management) encryption and they did not work.

I inquired and received the following email from Normsoft (who developed P-tunes):
Napster files have DRM protection to prevent file sharing and playback
with third-party software. The good news is, we will soon be adding support
for DRM WMA files. We have the license and are just waiting for Microsoft
to release the new Janus code which will enable us to support these files.
Janus was supposed to be released in April. As soon as it is released,
adding DRM support will be our #1 priority. We had originally hoped to
have this support in version 3.0.
In the meantime, you could burn the files to CD, then rip them back to
WMA or MP3 format. That will strip the DRM code from the files and they
will then play in Pocket Tunes.

I assume this is the same for iTunes purchases. I have the same problem when trying to share iTunes purchased songs from my iPod to another computer. The workaround has been like you said.. burn a copy to CD and then rip to MP3. The corresponding MP3 should play on the Treo. That being said, Apple is working with Motorola to bring iTunes to their next generation mobile phones. I'd like to see PalmOne work with Apple on this since the Treo has removable media...it can store a decent amount of music. Here's the link to the press release
