The Treo 600 is awesome! Great integration with my Mac OS X10.2.8.
Unfortunately, the Sprint Version does not come with an Email Pop Client. Nor does the SMS application work with Sprint.

When I try to use the SMS app, I get error messages or it reboots the phone when assigning a contact. Spoke to someone intelligent at Spring who told me that the built in SMS application does not work with Sprint.

Handspring had also told me the Sprint version comes with an email program- which it does not.

Any recommendations? Am I incorrect regarding the SMS application?

Please help!

Thanks,

Jay

Sprint has not yet enabled their SMS application yet. They will soon have a more true 2 way SMS. You should be able to receive just fine though.
You have many options when it comes to email apps for your treo. The new version of Sprints Business Connect is suppose to be available today as a matter of fact (late tonight).
I highly recommend Snappermail (worth every penny). If you want a free one try Eudora. It all really depends on your needs for email.

Thanks so much on the recommendation. I will try snappermail or Eudora. Isn't the Sprint Business Center more for corporate needs plus extra monthly charges.

On the SMS issue, Sprint reps were not aware of the their next generation SMS.
Where would I find it? Where should I look for it?

Were they incorrect in stating that the basic SMS app does not work with Sprint? If so, Why does it keep rebooting my phone when I try to add a contact to the message? Is this a bug with Handspring or just a bad phone that I received?

Sprints next generation SMS app is not available yet so you will not be able to find it anywhere however, pdaapps.com has just released treo600sms yesterday. Check it out:

I'm not a Sprint user and don't have my treo yet (waiting for GSM version) but I'm not sure what is causing your treo to reset like that. Must have a software conflict somewhere that's causing this issue. I have read on other forums about this specific issue.

As far as I understand, there is a "Personal" Business Connect app for the treo to send and receive email and yes I believe that there is a $5 monthly service fee for its use.

Supposedly Electric Pocket is coding native SMS client for 600. Their product, Mailer, is pretty decent email app. Not as robust as Snappermail, but useful nonetheless.

For now, web based messaging via "Vision" website is not bad.

I spent an hour + on the phone with Sprint Tech support yesterday, and longer trying to coordinate my email settings. Here's what I learned:

- SMS. Sprint doesn't support it yet. Maybe by the end of the year.
In the meantime, they use a web-based messaging tool. If a user sends an SMS/TXT message to your Sprint Treo number, you'll get an Inbox message in the SMS app on your Treo. The message will contain a link to a web page which you can access using the Treo web app. To reply, it must be sent through the web app.

- xxx@sprintpcs.com email. This is not connected to the SMS/TXT message messaging.
If someone sends an email to your new xxx@sprintpcs.com address (either from their phone or from their email) this goes to a Sprint web based email tool. If you log in to your account at sprintpcs.com, you can set up alerts. Then, you'll get an Inbox message in the SMS app on your Treo, with a link to a web page which you can access using the Treo web app. The link is a different page/link/interface from the "SMS" messaging referred to above.

- Sprint Business Connect.
It's $15/month for unlimited PCS Vision, Web Access, and Business Connect (personal or enterprise) is included. The Business Connect is kind of funky. There's functionality for Outlook and Notes support, but it only works if you install the software on your PC and if your PC is always connected online! I don't understand the point, or how this is supposed to work.
You can also set up access to a POP3 or IMAP server, separately from the connection above. The only problem that I've seen is that there are no useful Sync options. It's a <--> sync. So, if you delete a message from the Treo, it deletes from the server too.

All in all, the Sprint offerings for email/txt messages are pretty clunky. It's too bad this stuff isn't integrated, and that so much of it relies on the web interface rather than separate apps.

I just discovered that Sprint has another messaging option...
Sending an email to:
1231231234@messaging.sprintpcs.com

will send the actual message to the SMS Inbox on the Treo600.

it doesn't just send a link and require you to click and view from the web interface. it sends the actual message. you still can't reply though.

So, as far as I can figure:
1) Sending SMS, not possible, except from the web interface
2) Receiving SMS at 1231231234@messaging.sprintpcs.com sends the actual message to the Inbox
3) Receiving SMS at 1231231234 sends an alert to the Inbox and requires that you go to the messaging web interface to read
4) Receiving email at user@sprintpcs.com can be set up to send an alert to the Inbox and then requires that you go to the EMAIL web interface to read

If that is the case, why is Sprint discontinuing the use of the web based messaging system on Nov 17th? I would imagine if they were going to do this, they would want to have a replacement, or are they expecting users to just not use SMS for a month?

i dont think they are going to just flat out stop the web based short mail, I have not herd of this. if it does go down its for upgrades and it should go right back up. we usualy get word of future system outages 2 weeks before. I do know that sprints PTT phones launch on 11/16, thats the 2 way phones like nextel and one of them does use sms.
