Trouble with sound

I just bought a headphones adapter so now i can finally listen to music through my headphones and not the speakerphone. But there's a problem, I plugged, tested it and it worked fineso I unplugged it, expecting to play with it later, but the speakerphone has stopped working, so when the phone rings there's no sound and there's no sound when my alarm reminders go off. Worse, I'm not getting any sound on the earpiece for the phone so I can't hear persons calling me but they can hear me. To hear the incoming call or any sound from my Treo at all I have to plugin the headphones. More trouble, now there's a nasty noise on the line that the caller hears when they call me. Please help!!
