Default 2.5mm Audio Jack Issues

One of my Treos is acting up. Here's the situation:

While using a wired headset everything is fine until, without warning, the audio switches back to the system speaker. This is often frustrating because it happens in the middle of phone calls or while using an application where sound is good to have (Like LJP). After unplugging the headset and plugging it back in, or fiddling with it a bit, sound returns to the headset as normal.

I opened the treo up earlier to see if there was a contact issue with the audio jack. It seems to be solid and in place and making contact where it needs to be.

I'm not sure if I should just replace the mainboard or if I should rather find a "simpler" solution (ie, replace the jack - which would be tedious - etc).

Let me know if anybody has seen this before. Thanks.

Hi Hero:

Can't say I ever heard of that. As I am sure you have seen the same we have, the jack problem we usually hear about is that the Treo thinks a headphone is still plugged in when it is not.

Interesting....

I would try a different headset though that doesn't sound like the problem. But you will be sure it is the treo. When you opened up (I never have) the treo were the contacts clean and making solid contact? I guess you can insert the jack with the case off?

Yeah, I've tried various headsets and even a 2.5mm adapter to 3.5 mm and still had the same results. You can still insert headsets into the jack when it's open, and doing so did not bring anything abnormal to light.

Oh well, it's really odd, and it seems to be the kind of problem that is specific to a bad mainboard/2.5 mm jack. They just don't communicate efficiently. I'll probably end up just replacing it... Oh well.

Thanks!
